WoW: Battle for Azeroth in review: DX11 vs. DX12 and AMD vs. NVIDIA

Bonus: HBAO++

HBAO+ found its way into World of Warcraft in 2015, to be precise with patch 6.1 and the Warlords of Draenor expansion. When activating using the SSAO Ultra graphics option, we wanted to know how the setting affects performance and graphics quality. Both the GeForce and Radeon cards (because yes, the Ultra option is also available with AMD cards). The tests were performed in DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, without SMT.

Activating HBAO+ with the GTX 1060 reduces performance, but the difference is barely measurable. With a Vega 64, there is no power difference between high and ultra settings! Only the Radeon RX580 and its Polaris architecture are very sensitive in this respect and hardly able to apply the necessary power.

The representation appears to be the same between the three GPU architectures. In practice, however, the change from high to ultra mode is not really visible in the game, regardless of the location (e.g. with or without vegetation) or the number of light sources.
