The first thing we test is the text output. In all cases, except on the machine with Atom CPU and Windows XP and the system with Windows 98 SE, Cleartype was enabled.
Contents of the test:
The font sizes are tested from 8 to 197 points in single steps with 500 runs each. In each case, an alternating letter is randomly generated and rendered in a randomly selected color at a random position. The initial value for the random generator is always identical, so that all test runs always show the same content. The font used is “Arial”.
GDI functions used:
for the plain text benchmark:
- SetBkMode
- GetTextMetrics
- CreateFontIndirect
- SetTextColor
- TextOut
- SelectObject
- DeleteObject
additionally for DIB buffer (test with buffering):
- CreateCompatibleDC
- CreateDIBSection
- CreateSolidBrush
- Rectangle
- BitBlt
Direct drawing without buffer

Conclusion
The bottom line is that there is nothing special here. Not only the GMA450 with the Intel Atom processor still does quite well in the field of all cards, but also the old onboard graphics solution Geforce 7050 on the 610i chipset delivers surprisingly good results. The Radeon graphics cards are close to each other and don’t make any mistakes either. In comparison to the older solutions, Intel’s G45 and the Geforce 8100 are disappointing on the onboard chips. The old 6800GT with only 256 MB GDDR3 can still keep up very well under Aero thanks to internal 2D units, but working without Aero turns into a disaster when you try to move larger flow texts in one piece in real time, for example.
