Summary and conclusion
Since there were various unavoidable repetitions from the last two NASync articles in this article, I wanted to point out again at this point that I have nevertheless re-recorded all screenshots from UGOS. My DXP6800 Pro was delivered with version 1.0.0.0427, I set it up temporarily, updated it to version 1.0.0.0940 and then reset everything to factory settings. I then started my test run and took the pictures used here. The following are a few more anomalies from my tests:
- The screws on the back are tighter than on the other models
- The internal power supply unit makes it easy to connect to an uninterruptible power supply
- The two fans installed at the rear draw air into the case, which is expelled at the front
- All drive bays appear to be hot-swappable
- It is not possible to confirm with Enter in some input windows
- Applications in the App Center have more detailed descriptions and now also screenshots
- On a failed installation, I was directed to the log center for more details, but the error does not appear there at all
- The popup with the recommended first steps no longer checks off the points immediately after clicking on them, they must be marked as completed independently
- The first start of the Photos app took an unusually long time, but after that everything was fine
- Due to the rubber feet, this model is higher overall despite the same case height
- Moderate effort is required to reach the PCIe slot, no direct access
- No list of tested or supported expansion cards available from Ugreen
- No public changelog for UGOS, apart from an overlay in the update window
- Rsync functions are still marked with “Coming Soon”
I would like to highlight another new feature, because in addition to containers, UGOS can now also offer full virtualization.
On the BIOS/UEFI side, the whole thing is based on TianoCore and works without any problems in my test with Windows 11. However, it probably makes more sense to use it with a lean Linux operating system or perhaps Home Assistant, otherwise the 8GB of RAM will quickly run out.
What I also quickly ran out of was an understanding of the choice of fan installed in the power supply unit. As you may have already noticed on the previous page, at over 40 dB(A) at idle, the DXP6800 Pro is really very loud for a NAS. And that really shouldn’t be the case, even when generating preview images and converting videos, the processor remains just as inconspicuous at 75°C at its peak as the cooler and the two housing fans. It’s really only the power supply fan that stands out in a very negative way. And unfortunately this is not an isolated case, there are already various posts on Reddit about this problem and instructions for modifying it. I asked Ugreen for a statement on 17.07.2024, but have not yet received an answer. As soon as I receive one, I will add it here.
In contrast to the two NASync series products tested so far, Ugreen offers a 3-year warranty here instead of 2 years, which I think is only reasonable for this price segment. After the Kickstarter campaign ended, the price rose from the equivalent of 594 euros to 915 euros. At least on paper, because you still can’t buy the DXP6800 Pro directly at the time of testing. Based on these provisional figures, however, the hardware is once again a tempting offer. The combination of the 12 threads of the i5-1235U, 6x 3.5″ slots, 2x 10GbE LAN and Thunderbolt 4 is not available on the market in this form, and certainly not for less than 1000 euros.
Until the problem with the power supply fan is resolved, however, I can only recommend this NAS if it is to be banished to the basement anyway. But having to replace something in a new device and then tinkering with the power supply is something I don’t approve of. In my opinion, neither an unnecessarily loud fan nor a normal end customer has any business there. And even if UGOS has been developed a good bit further, it still feels like beta software.
The test sample was provided by Ugreen without obligation. There was and is no influence on the tests and results. There was also no compensation for expenses and no obligation to publish.
