Summary and interim conclusion
Before I come to my final thoughts, here is a collection of various comments that I noticed during my test phase:
- The checklist for beginners marks the clicked item directly as completed and does not check whether the linked option has really been set or configured.
- The external link for multi-terminal login in the settings leads to an Error 404 web page.
- The “How to select a raid” help page linked in the Storage Manager leads to a completely different article.
- Pools and volumes cannot be named, only commented on. However, this commented name is not displayed in the various drop-down menus.
- The container images come from Docker Hub, other sources can be added in the settings.
- Air is sucked in at the back through the dust filter and blown out at the front through the fairly wide gaps between the bays.
- There isno internal power supply, but the external 19V power supply can be easily replaced in the event of a fault.
- By default, hard disks are switched off after a while when inactive.
- The Task Center, which displays background tasks, minimizes itself as soon as something outside the browser tab is clicked.
- In the Photos app, it takes quite a while for thumbnails to be generated for all images. However, the processor is only utilized at around 30%, so it could apparently be much faster.
- Ifyou select several hundred images at the same time and try to delete them, only a parameter error is displayed.
- If you activate automatic updates for AI recognition models in the advanced settings, the “Ugreen_ai_sdk_tool” service generates a constant 15-20% CPU load. Apparently without actively scanning anything.
- All screws are magnetic.
- The opening on the underside is lined all around the inside with a foam barrier.
- A maximum of 22TB HDDs are “only” supported. however, 24TB models have been available on the market for a while.
- In addition to the rubberized brackets on the side, there are also small pads made of solid foam in the bottom of the hard drive brackets.
- In order to be able to install 2.5″ SSDs, one of the holders for 3.5″ HDDs must be unscrewed from the thread, as already mentioned. However, the screwdriver supplied is too small for this.
- The two free M.2 slots are labeled KeyM1 and KeyM3, the SSD with the operating system is in slot KeyM2.
The look is of course always a matter of taste, but I can only repeat myself here: I personally really like the design. And have you even noticed up to this point that the front and back are not made of aluminum like the rest, but of plastic? Keeping the color between the two materials so identical is a challenge that Ugreen has mastered with flying colors.
I can forgive to some extent how difficult it is to get hold of the core components. To be fair, however, I must also admit that all the slots that are normally relevant to the buyer and even the large fan have been kept very easily accessible.
The commands available via SSH are also quite accessible; Ugreen has left quite a few options active here. Incidentally, SSH must first be activated manually; it makes sense for it to be deactivated automatically directly after the initial setup. There isalso a function in the settings to allow the connection only from local IP addresses in the network.
However, my experience with the DXP4800 Plus got off to a very bumpy start, as this error message was the only thing it spit out at first. In the end, only a technician was able to help via remote maintenance, who carried out a complete reinstallation. The whole thing was probably due to an outdated software version that was installed on my very early test copy. It will probably no longer occur in the models delivered to customers.
I also noticed that the Windows application from Ugreen simply usesthe open source tool Syncthingin the background to synchronize files between the computer and the NAS . I contacted the developers and asked whether they knew about this and whether the project received at least some financial support. Unfortunately, I did not receive any feedback before the release.
No matter how good the hardware is, a good NAS stands and falls with the software. And as I feared, Ugreen still has a lot of catching up to do and work to do before it can compete with the years of experience and previous development of the other competitors on the market. A start has been made and the current status is certainly usable, but many functions are missing or grayed out with “Coming Soon”. I’ll leave you with this interim conclusion for now, as a test report on the smaller DXP2800 will follow immediately. Hopefully I’ll be able to provide a few more answers from the manufacturer and developers, which I didn’t receive in time for publication due to the Chinese holidays.
All models in the NASync series are currently only available via Kickstarter, with a 35% discount on the RRP until May 9, 2024.
The test sample was provided by Ugreen without obligation. There was and is no influence on the tests and results. There was also no compensation for expenses and no obligation to publish.
