So now it’s getting exciting if the whole thing works as I imagined (small spoiler: yes it did). After I connected the power supply and pressed the power button, the monitor already gave its first sign of life and the device welcomed me directly in the control surface. Here, all the axes can be moved by touch, the spindle can be switched on and the Z-probe can be controlled. What the Z-Probe is, you will learn in a moment.
Although I had informed myself in advance which programs are available, I downloaded GRBLCONTROLL on my laptop to make the first runs. However, I plan to switch to Estelcam because I have a better overview there and the whole program is just more professionally designed.
Now that we’ve touched on the subject of software, it’s finally time to get milling. TwoTrees includes a plastic plate in the scope of delivery on which we can start our first attempts. Here you can also see the previously mentioned clamping claws, of which 6 are included in the accessories.
First of all, we set our X and Y zero point. To do this, move to the corner of the workpiece and set the zero mark. The software or the milling machine now knows where our workpiece is.
Next, we use what is called the Z-probe or tool length measurement. This involves attaching an alligator clip to the cutter and placing the magnetic probe on the part.
As soon as the tool touches the magnetic probe, the milling machine recognizes the length of our cutter and sets the zero point.
Now that the whole thing has been stored in our software, we can get started….
