Summary and conclusion
I’ll let you in on Roman’s secret: the only thing that distinguishes the two pastes is really the silicone oil used. The color is completely irrelevant. The Kryonaut Extreme is mainly aimed at LN2 overclockers and therefore relies on a different silicone oil that is still resistant in lower temperature ranges, which also costs a little more. The level of filling with thermally conductive particles, on the other hand, whose size and mixing ratio are completely identical within the manufacturing and measurement tolerances, is the same. Another lesson learned!
We also saw today that the normal Kryonaut performs no worse or better at higher temperatures and layer thicknesses (BLT) under ideal laboratory conditions than the Extreme, which only brings real added value in LN2 sessions that is more in line with the higher price. Anyone who thinks that the higher price alone means they are buying the better paste with the Extreme may be disappointed after today’s article, but that’s how marketing works. Tests that show the Kryonaut Extreme to be clearly ahead on graphics cards or CPUs either use pastes of different manufacturing quality or they suffer from the measurement setup and inaccurate measurement conditions. Or the price is used as an argument for rounding up, because what costs more must be better. But that is not the case here.
The normal user will actually have no reason to buy the more expensive Kryonaut Extreme for the CPU, as this is basically just wasting money. The slightly more stable silicone oil of the Kryonaut Extreme in the low temperature range will hardly be noticed under normal operating conditions. However, it should also be noted that both pastes now have to fear strong competitor products that not only perform better, but are also often significantly cheaper. So you buy and pay for the name at the same time.
Nevertheless, I can also tease in this context that Thermal Grizzly will face up to this challenge and launch new products on the market that are based on current trends and should once again play a leading role. Of course, I will also be reporting on this, because you have to be fair and put everything in the database promptly that is not up to scratch. That’s why I’m asking everyone – manufacturers, suppliers and readers – to contact me by email if there are any new products or gaps in the database. I will of course be happy to fill them.
