Developed by Naughty Dog and originally released by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2013 exclusively for the PlayStation 3, the action-adventure game, The Last of Us, has finally made its way to the PC. Officially titled “The Last of Us Part 1: Remastered,” the PC version brings the award-winning masterpiece to a new platform, allowing PC gamers to immerse themselves in the deep and emotional world of Joel and Ellie.
The PC port brings not only the main story and all the DLCs released so far, but also some notable technical improvements. These include improved textures, higher resolution, and enhanced settings options that allow PC players to customize the game according to their individual preferences. In addition, the PC version supports ray tracing and can be played on powerful systems in 4K resolution and at 60 FPS or higher. These enhancements provide a more immersive gameplay experience, and add a new level of polish to the already impressive world of The Last of Us.
Another great advantage of the PC port is the possibility for the modding community to unleash their creativity. Players can now create and share custom content to enhance the gaming experience and experience unique adventures in the world of The Last of Us. These mods could add new characters, weapons, outfits, and even alternate storylines that make the game more engaging and fun. The PC version of The Last of Us Part 1: Remastered offers controller support as well as keyboard and mouse optimization. Players can choose their preferred input mode and control the game according to their preferences. In addition, players can customize the mouse’s button layout and sensitivity to ensure a comfortable and tailored gaming experience.
So much for the game. The fact that many gamers have already been eagerly waiting for a PC port of the game is also nothing new. What is annoying for publishers, on the other hand, is that more and more games are also being distributed illegally in ever shorter periods of time by circumventing copy protection mechanisms. In the case of this game, it barely took 30 minutes and the game was also diligently redistributed by Russian torrent servers right away. The extent to which this astonishingly fast “work” is not only tolerated but also encouraged by the state is a matter of considerable debate. Since I have had quite good contacts to relevant software developers and reverse engineers (also in Russia) for years, this has of course been a hotly discussed topic internally over and over again in the last few months.
Even though it’s tempting to get such an expensive game (starting at 60 Euros RRP) for free, I’m one of those who neither beg the publishers for keys nor use torrents & co. to get rich on the intellectual property of third parties for free. A lot of work goes into such works and as a former programmer I also know what damage can be done with such illegal copies. The fact that you can buy valid keys abroad is of course part of a certain gray area, but I tolerate it and even use it myself if necessary, as long as they are reputable resellers. Then you save at least the markup and the penalty surcharge for Europeans.
“The Last of Us Part 1: Remastered” is compatible with both Windows and macOS and requires a relatively powerful PC to provide the best possible gaming experience. The system requirements vary depending on the selected graphics settings and desired frame rate. However, gamers should be prepared that a mid-range to high-end PC is required to enjoy the game in higher settings and with stable performance.
And what is my first impression now? The PC port of The Last of Us Part 1: Remastered proves to be a successful conversion of the groundbreaking game that was originally released on the PlayStation 3. The improved graphics, customization options, and support for the modding community open up new dimensions of the gaming experience, drawing in both long-time fans and new players. Sure, the game also eats cards like a GeForce RTX 4090 in Ultra HD with a gesture of nonchalance when you fully push the settings.
But for PC gamers like me who haven’t had the chance to experience the gripping story and stunning environments of The Last of Us, this is finally the perfect opportunity to get involved in the adventure after all. The Last of Us Part 1: Remastered finally continues the game’s legacy on PC, and the whole thing offers an impressive experience that is both technically and narratively on a high level. At least I have not noticed anything to the contrary so far.
