The moment of truth: Real workloads from the daily work environment
Let’s now move on to a direct comparison with real applications The following benchmarks show some amazing things, where the T-FORCE Cardea Z540 is usually just ahead of the MSI M570 Pro. But it is also interesting that all PCIe 5.0 SSDs dominate less in some applications than one might expect from the theoretical performance data. Yes, these new PCIe 5.0 SSDs are really fast, but the SSD is not always the real slowing link in the chain. When it comes to writing, programs such as Ansys Icepak and Handbrake benefit enormously, as the rate is significantly higher when it comes to writing larger streams. Maya 2017, MCAT and 3dsm, on the other hand, are slightly weaker than the fast HP FX9000 Pro and PCIe 4.0. However, the vast majority of programs benefit from the new standard.
Reading is very similar, the performance boost is usually as significant and more or less pronounced as with writing. You can definitely feel the great theoretical advantage in practice, even if it is not as extreme as you might have expected. And what does it look like in direct comparison? Here too, you can see the slight advantage of the T-FORCE Cardea Z540 in a few apps, especially with large blocks. So you can see that the firmware has been optimized slightly differently here.
Yes, the performance has also increased visibly in some applications, but not as extremely as the synthetic benchmarks might suggest. And that’s why you really have to consider whether you can really feel it subjectively and, above all, whether it really increases productivity in your individual case to such an extent that the extra cost is worth it. If the answer is yes, then you will certainly do everything right with the new SSD. But it really depends on the applications. Synthetics isn’t everything and you won’t win anything at work with benchmarks.
Summary and conclusion
If we ignore the price of around 300 euros, then this SSD is a technically solid product, but no longer the spearhead of what is currently possible, that was in 2023. Nowadays, up to 2000 MB/s more is possible. Nevertheless, such an SSD can be recommended to all those who are on the hunt for the last ounce of performance, who have enough space on the motherboard and for whom the 5-year warranty from T-FORCE takes away some of the doubt as to how long the controller and the Micron NAND can cope with the change from pSLC and TLC mode without loss. It’s no secret that this is also due to the interaction between controller and flash memory. However, Micron hasn’t just been doing this since yesterday and the TBW specifications are always one of those things. For example, I only wrecked an Intel SSD after several petabytes, although according to the specs it should have been dead for a long time.
I’ve written enough about the optional DARK AirFlow cooler, it’s simply better not to buy it. I assume the product manager responsible spends the whole day under a noisy air conditioner and therefore doesn’t hear the fan. I can’t really explain this product choice any other way. But you can also cool the SSD via the mainboard if there is enough airflow in the case.
Conclusion: It’s a decent product, there are no flaws (and yes, I’m always that picky) and, as always, the last bit of performance is always the most expensive. If you want to be beautiful, fast and quiet at the same time, you have to suffer. Or grumble and pay. Whereby some competitors with the identical product are up to 50 euros cheaper. Let’s see how the price normalizes later on the road. In the end, it really just comes down to firmware optimization, because the rest of the boards are completely identical. Such a hefty surcharge would certainly not be a good idea.
