First, I upgraded the RAM. With the standard RAM configuration, up to 1,000 connections can be made at the same time, with a RAM upgrade even up to 2,000. But that’s exactly what’s important, especially since you can still use various services that could otherwise slow down the system. The system doesn’t start faster with more RAM, but you should notice it during operation. In the picture below we see the one 4 GB DDR4 SODIMM module from Synology, below that my final 2x 8 GB kit DDR4 3200 ECC from Kingston.
It’s important to note that the DS923 can finally use ECC RAM, which is of course something you have to consider when buying. Either you buy the RAM directly from Synology or you should take a look at the compatibility list to not provoke a failure. I first tested the maximum expansion with 32 GB, which did not bring any further advantages. For me, the 16 GB is easily enough, especially since the whole thing becomes significantly cheaper. If you want to read the story about my Amazon order again – here is the link as a reminder:
The installation works like any mobile device in the form of notebooks or mini PCs. Fold up, insert and fold back until the lugs snap into place. The opening is on the inside, which is unfortunately exactly where the slots are located. If you replace the RAM, this should be the first step before installing the hard disk. This saves the subsequent removal of the hard disks.
By the way, the memory was recognized by the system right away and without any problems. The Zen CPU of the first generation can’t do more than DDR4 3200 anyway, but the performance depends a bit on the memory clock. Especially with many simultaneous accesses, this can bring quite noticeable advantages. Just try synchronizing directories with many small files or indexing. Besides that, many apps also benefit from the higher clock rate and not only from the size of the modules. Especially since dual-channel is the least you should add when upgrading. Another 4 GB module is also sufficient in an emergency.
