Super Resolution for all: DirectSR simplifies integration of FSR, DLSS and XeSS in DX12 games

The gaming landscape is constantly evolving, and with it the demands on graphics cards. Super-resolution technologies such as NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS have become an important tool for improving image quality in games without compromising performance.

Microsoft has now introduced DirectSR, a new technology designed to simplify the integration of these technologies into games. DirectSR is intended to act as a unified API that allows developers to support different super-resolution solutions in their games without having to duplicate code for each individual technology.

What is DirectSR?

DirectSR is a low-level API that allows developers to integrate super-resolution upscaling into their games. The technology provides a layer of abstraction over the implementation details of each super-resolution technology, allowing developers to focus on delivering high-quality imaging without having to worry about the underlying hardware.

Advantages of DirectSR

DirectSR offers developers several advantages:

  • Simplified integration: DirectSR greatly simplifies the process of implementing super-resolution in games. Developers no longer need to write separate code for each technology, saving time and resources.
  • Increased compatibility: DirectSR can help improve the compatibility of super-resolution technologies with a wider range of games. Since developers only need to use one API, they are more likely to support this technology in their games.
  • Improved performance: DirectSR can improve the performance of super-resolution technologies by distributing the workload across the GPU.
  • Future-proof: DirectSR is future-proof and can support new super-resolution technologies as they become available.

Support for DirectSR

Microsoft is working with GPU manufacturers such as AMD, NVIDIA and Intel to support DirectSR in their drivers. The technology will initially be available with support for AMD FSR 2.2, followed by NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS.

Availability

DirectSR is currently available as a preview via the Agility SDK 1.714.0-preview. The latest drivers with support for DirectSR can be found on the AMD, NVIDIA and Intel websites.

Outlook

Microsoft DirectSR has the potential to revolutionize the integration of super-resolution technologies into games. By simplifying the integration process and improving compatibility, DirectSR can help make these technologies available in a wider range of games, improving the gaming experience for all.

So far...

Das ist mir klar, aber mit entsprechenden Verträgen ließe sich das bestimmt regeln. Sofern denn überhaupt von NV gewollt, wo ich eher daran zweifle.
