Steam plans to provide its own system for the ASUS ROG Ally

There are now a large number of handheld consoles on the market, and the selection of games that can be played on them is also impressive. Steam has not only developed its own handheld with the Steam Deck, but also offers its own operating system, SteamOS. A patch update has now made this known: Steam is planning to expand its own operating system, SteamOS, and will also support the Asus ROG Ally, as The Verge reports.

For some, it was initially unclear whether this was a mistake, as this information has not yet been officially confirmed. However, when asked, it was confirmed that active work is being done to make SteamOS compatible with the Asus ROG Ally. However, this support is not intended to be exclusive to Asus – the aim is for other handheld competitors to also receive the SteamOS operating system.

“The note about ROG Ally keys is related to third-party device support for SteamOS. The team is continuing to work on adding support for additional handhelds on SteamOS.”

But that shouldn’t be the only announcement Steam has in store. With SteamOS 3, Valve is also planning a “general version” of the operating system that can also be installed on non-handheld PCs. However, the development of this version is not yet complete, but steady progress is being made. The company is also working on a dual-boot function that will allow the Steam Deck to switch between two operating systems. This would give users the choice between Windows and SteamOS to provide more flexibility. Work on the Windows drivers is already underway, but a release date is not yet known.

As for Windows, we’re preparing to make the remaining Windows drivers for Steam Deck OLED available (you might have seen that we are prepping firmware for the Bluetooth driver). There’s no update on the timing for dual boot support-it’s still a priority, but we haven’t been able to get to it just yet.

With the ASUS Rog Ally, the new OS could definitely benefit as they are more expensive but have more power. This could be an option for some who may not have been convinced by the Steam Deck due to its technical specifications or who own a Steam Deck but are slowly reaching its limits.
