After all the details, now we want to see results. Let’s start with the Anycubic cube. The whole thing was printed in one hour and 30 minutes. The level of detail is outstanding and such results are not possible with an FDM printer. This is where such printers reach their clear limits.
Next I printed out a figure (Killa) from a game and again the details are extremely detailed and high resolution. Even the smallest parts are very easy to see. The printing time here was four hours for a figure 21 cm high.
Another part are the 2 Viking axes, still unpainted. Again, the details are very pronounced and sharp edges are also really sharp. For this, the printing time was 2 hours and the parts were glued afterwards to make a total length of 35 cm possible.
After printing, all parts are cleaned in isopropanol and cured with a UV lamp to ensure that the components are completely solid and hard. For this, I used Anycubic’s Wash and Cure Station, which does both.
Also for this the expenditure must be included of course. If you want to be beautiful, you have to suffer a little. But then the result rewards you.
At the same time, however, I must issue a warning here. The SLA printout should only be handled with disposable gloves before final curing. It is also advisable to wear respiratory protection, as resin is harmful to health and emits vapours. The room in which the printer is located should always be well ventilated. Children should not handle it without adult supervision, if even the youngest want to get involved with 3D printing.
Conclusion and summary
Now we come to the conclusion, which at the same time is a bit longer, because there are also negative points and I want to be fair, not to conceal such things. At the beginning I already mentioned the first negative point: the missing rubber seal on the plastic cover. I would have really liked to see this one, because the reasoning itself is due to the process of LCD 3D printing and the solvents. SLA has the disadvantage that it causes odours to develop.
Depending on the resin, the smell is different and some resin variants are even rather odorless, but others really have an unpleasant evaporation. A rubber gasket would keep the vapors in the pressure chamber more so they don’t spread throughout the room right away. So here you should readjust or solve it like other manufacturers and install an activated carbon filter, which attracts and filters the vapors. Fortunately, there are also small battery-operated filters in the accessories trade that you can place in the pressure chamber to suck off most of the dirt.
Desweiteren bemangelle ide loud fans and I will replace these I myself, best against real against silent fans, of which I now really own enough. That’s a real shame, because the printing is largely silent – except for the hum of the motors as they move and the slight crunch of the pressure as the printing platform is raised.
After my criticisms, there are of course positives to report. The Anycubic Mono X delivers a really highly detailed resolution and is a lot of fun to watch as a real model is created from such a liquid. The details of the models is unsurpassed and reworking is almost not necessary. Good, except for where the support structure made contact. The Mono X is also very fast and I have another printer from another manufacturer here that I am testing. The Mono-X needs 3 hours less printing time for the same model and the same parameters – that’s really a number in itself.
Now we come to the most important question: Who needs such a printer at all and can it be recommended?
Yes, I can definitely give a recommendation here, as the print results are excellent and the very easy operation and very good workmanship of the printer can inspire. A lot of emphasis has been placed on precision and you won’t find any really inferior materials here.Of course, you also have to keep in mind my criticisms and the additional costs. Whether you need something like that is something everyone has to ask themselves, because that’s the way it is with a lot of hobbies. To have or not to have?
I’m an avid modeler and nerd, plus a fan of various comic and game characters. I get my money’s worth here with the Mono X and print the respective figure myself and also paint it. An enthusiastic tabletop gamer should probably also enjoy the Mono X. But designers who print models for presentation also have their advantages here, because the models can be printed 1:1 with the same precision as the original.
In summary, you can’t go wrong with the Anycubic Photon Mono X and you can recommend it with a clear conscience, despite the points that stand out negatively. A successor has already been introduced recently and you can actually get the even better results with the new Photon Mono X 6K. Cost issue, as always. Currently, there are also Blackfriday deals to be found, listing the Mono X for around 250 Euros. So, if you are thinking of buying such a printer, now is certainly the best time to really save money. Of course, you should compare again to find the right one for you. Printers are a dime a dozen.
