How it works
The operation of such printers is quite simple, because during printing the printing platform is lowered into the tank filled with resin and the bottom of the tank is covered with a thin translucent FEP film. The printing platform is now lowered so that the monochrome display is exposed layer by layer with UV light and then moves upwards piece by piece after each layer, thus creating the desired model.
Unlike FDM printers, here we only have the movement of the Y-axis.
With SLA printers, high precision and accuracy is the key. Anycubic uses dual linear rails, which guarantee greater stability and thus consistent print quality.
The main player in my Mono X, however, is the 8.9-inch 4K monochrome display. This is one of the largest and fastest in the world of consumer LCD 3D printers. The special feature of this monochrome display is the high printing speed, because older models still needed up to 9 seconds per layer to cure the resin. The new screen used here requires only up to 1.5 seconds per shift, enabling us to print quickly and precisely.
The lifetime of such a display is given by Anycubic with about 2000 hours. Older models had a life span of just under 600 hours. This is very easy on our wallet, because replacements cost a hefty 135 euros. You also have to factor that into the calculation. Next up is the printing platform, which is made entirely of aluminium and is precisely manufactured and extremely smooth, with the prints holding up extremely well.
In some cases they even stick too well and I therefore recommend a removable spring steel plate, which is mounted in no time. The total build volume of the Anycubic Photon Mono X is 192 x 120 x 245mm, making it one of the big players in LCD 3D printing.
Such a printer needs of course the right resin lining or enough of it and therefore the tank has a decent size to hold up to 500 ml of resin. This tank is completely made of aluminum and in the upper left corner there is an inlet (gutter) to take up the excess resin after printing and use it again for the next print.
At the bottom of the tank the FEP foil is well clamped by 14 screws and a frame. Unfortunately, Anycubic didn’t include a replacement there, because the foils also wear out and need to be replaced over time. So here you have to take action yourself and order a replacement in advance. You can get these foils on the Internet in packs of 5 from about 20 euros. These costs must also always be included. So extremely cheap is not the fun.
