HDR performance
If you wanted to use the 1000 nits peak brightness with an AMD GPU, you had to use a workaround such as GRU. And this is exactly what Samsung has fixed with FW 1622. I will also give you my settings here as a recommendation. This will give you a very good RGB balance. (Depending on the panel lottery and factory calibration, this may or may not work for you)
NVIDIA is known to look like this. Then you can make a better comparison with AMD. (The measurements are current) For further details, please refer to the article from six months ago.
Peak 1000 mode with the RTX 4090
Personally, I always play with the RTX 4090 and I also use the Contrast Enhancer on low in HDR. I like the image much better there, even if it affects the EOTF tracking.
If you have an NVIDIA GPU connected to the OLED G8, you should give it a try. I like the picture much better. A matter of taste! But now to the corpus delicti…
Peak 1000 mode with the RX 6700 XT
Whether you set the tone mapping to off, basic or advanced doesn’t matter in the end, because it has no influence at all. Why does Samsung offer these setting options in conjunction with an AMD GPU? I have no idea. In conjunction with an NVIDIA GPU, it looks completely different, if you are interested, you should take another look at the article from December 2023.
HDR 1000 Nits AMD
True Black 400 with the RX 6700 XT
If you want the most accurate color possible, you should use this mode. Again, it doesn’t matter if you change the tone mapping. I always measure the same!
HDR True Black 400
The HDR True Black 400 mode makes no difference between AMD or NVIDIA. But that’s nothing new!
In AMD Peak 1000 Nits mode, the picture is much too bright compared to NVIDIA – and that basically over the entire EOTF. Samsung should improve this again. At least you can now use the maximum peak brightness. It is also a fact that the larger the APL becomes, the sooner the roll-off occurs. NVIDIA is hit much harder here than AMD. The bottom line is that you are trading too bright for too dark. Both should be improved by Samsung. Then I’ll come to the conclusion, last page.
