Real achievable clock rates and overclocking
The clock rates and readout is very fancy and time-consuming, so I automated it. This time I logged in all games (only WQHD) and calculated an average for everything, which I first recorded in a table:
Card | Average in MHz | Maximum boost in MHz |
AMD Radeon RX 7800XT MBA 16 GB | 2462 | 2546 |
PowerColor RX 7800XT Hellhound Spectral White | 2622 | 2709 |
XFX Radeon RX 7700XT QICK 12 GB | 2604 | 2671 |
Sapphire Radeon RX 7700XT Pulse 12 GB | 2594 | 2662 |
In the gaming runs I now test the fully warmed up card and yes, the cooler is really good and the temperature-related clock drop is limited.
GPU and memory temperatures in the case
The differences are not as great as I feared if you use a proper case. In the end, the card does not dissipate more waste heat than the previous models, but even less. This time I’m doing the word case test with the Torture Run for maximum heating. Torture tests for graphics cards, also known as stress or load tests, are an important procedure for evaluating the performance and reliability of graphics cards.
The main purpose of these tests is to operate the graphics card under extreme conditions in order to determine its performance limits and stability. The graphics card is loaded with demanding tasks that usually go far beyond the normal level of use. This enables manufacturers and users to assess the reliability and stability of the card under maximum load. A critical aspect of these tests is monitoring the maximum heating of all components of the graphics card, including the memory modules. High temperatures can affect performance and even reduce the longevity of the components.
The Optris Pi640 infrared camera I use is a sophisticated tool that is able to perform thermal imaging and temperature measurements with high precision. This makes it a valuable tool for me in applications where accurate temperature monitoring and diagnostics are required. With its true 640 x 480 pixel image resolution and good optics, the Optris Pi640 provides detailed thermal images when detail is critical. It is also capable of working in a wide temperature range, which underlines its versatility for use in such measurements. In addition, there are now the appropriate infrared images for the stress test and…
also the gaming session, which generates very similar temperatures in the long turn:
