Summary
And where does the PowerColor RX 7800XT Hellhound Spectral White fit in? First of all, it is a nice white spot on the graphics card landscape and interesting for all those who like a completely white build. Of course, I can’t avoid a conclusion on performance after the digressions on looks. AMD has deliberately positioned the NAVI32 full expansion for 549 euros RRP against NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB. With a current street price of 589 euros, the white cosmetic surcharge must of course be included.
And now you have to weigh up what you prefer to play in the future – pure raster graphics or games with DXR or ray tracing capabilities. The GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB has 4 GB less memory, which shouldn’t be a big issue in WQHD at the moment, but could be at some point. In QHD, the PowerColor RX 7800XT Hellhound Spectral White easily takes 3 percent off the RX 7800XT MBA in the 60:40 percent mix of raster and ray tracing games and is therefore significantly faster than AMD’s reference. The GeForce RTX 4070 FE 12 GB is narrowly beaten or at least on a par. It would even be clearly ahead in pure raster graphics, but behind in DXR only. What is disappointing, however, is the power consumption, even if AMD does not consider this to be so relevant for gamers. There’s no need to argue about a few watts, but it’s still 80 to 100 watts more that you’re blowing into the environment compared to an RTX 4070.
So this performance boost, even compared to the MBA card (20 watts more), has been bought with an energy crowbar. Not only does the power come into play here, but also the need to dissipate this waste heat, as the system heats up much faster on paper. And PowerColor has done a great job here, as the cooler performs confidently and even quietly. The material is fine and the pads and, above all, the heat-conducting paste have been well thought out.
Conclusion
Better late than never and yes, it is a stylish white card. But it remains to be seen how relevant it will be for the masses, because you really have to see whether the price is still a factor. You have always had to pay extra for exclusivity and being different, which of course puts the price into perspective. More effort and smaller quantities unfortunately cost more. That’s why I’m not giving it the “Best Buy”, but the “Editor’s Choice”, because I like the look of the map and its technical implementation.
If you want to mod or are looking for something stylish for your PC and either feel inclined towards the AMD microcosm or don’t care about it at all, you’re welcome to buy it if you like it. Provided you have the necessary finances.
The graphics card was provided in advance by PowerColor for this test. The only condition was compliance with the embargo period, no influence or compensation was given.
