Fan curve and operating noise (“loudness”)
Now we come to what automatically arises when the waste heat is removed: the universally hated fan noise. The measurements in the measurement chamber are, as always, a bit tricky, because you can’t measure anything through the closed side window. That’s why I manually adjust the fans to the values I measured in the closed case during gaming and torture later and leave the setup open. The almost 1600 rpm in the gaming loop are quite audible and in the stress test it is then up to 1630 rpm, which would also still be acceptable as long as the sound characteristics are also okay. You’ll read whether this is the case in a moment.
But what does the measurement for the operating noise show? You can see nicely in the frequency analysis, how the sound is split up. With 36.8 dB(A) in the gaming loop and just under 200 watts in Cyberpunk 2077, it’s just about okay, even though we see an oscillating curve in the area from about 1.5 KHz, which can clearly be attributed to the rotor blades. Vibrations and poor synchronization can really be heard here. I think the assessment would have been much more positive with better fans. Overall, the fans are richly growly, which can also be seen in the massive low frequency foundation. We also see the harmonics of minimal coil and capacitor buzzing, though these only occur at high FPS rates or heavy load changes (slight spikes).
It is a tiny bit louder in the stress test, but even that is nothing to completely steal your mind; it is still somewhat tolerable, though not pretty. So, when the side panel is closed, the noise is perceptible, which in the end is due to the price.
