Sound Check
The assessment is always a bit difficult with Bluetooth, because the sound is only as good as the source. So I also connected it with jack and ran it through an external amplifier. The playback is – to put it succinctly – fit for purpose and thus very good. The low end is very pronounced and you’ll find the usual bathtub, but it doesn’t really bother you in a fun pair of headphones. The whole thing also sounds quite warm and not artificially overpowered. The PX7s can reproduce rock music excellently and even tempt you to headbang hard when the mood suits you. Level stability as a feature.
To give a good estimate of the whole range, I like to go into the classical field, because that is the real challenge through orchestras and solo instruments in different areas from chamber music to organ (Toccata and Fugue in D minor at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig) to Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F (same recording venue). The PX7s also manage this hurdle excellently. Bowers and Wilkins is perfectly positioned in this area, even if it’s not a truly neutral listening experience. The resolution and filigree details are not particularly affected by the sound characteristics.
The highs come in very detailed, clear and very precise, almost clinical. The mids are just as detailed and convey a convincingly three-dimensional sound image right down to the upper bass. That fits pretty well so far, without getting really analytical. Did I write fun headphones? That’s exactly what they are. The Px7s really picked me up, for example on a movie night with the movie “Saving Private Ryan”. Already after a short time one felt acoustically like in the middle of the beach of Normandy. Rain scenes, detonations, loud voices, vehicles all had sounded very realistic and gave me goosebumps.
Summary and conclusion
The Bowers & Wilkins PX7s certainly don’t belong in the “cheap” category, but they are well worth the price. In a price range of 399 € RRP, they can at least present their own character and thus stand out pleasantly from the often faceless mass of many ANC headphones. Processing and quality are excellent and leave nothing to be desired. Apart from the non-changeable pads, which should be a good thing in such a price range. Because in terms of sound, they cut a very good figure and can convince all along the line despite (or perhaps because of) the characteristics of a slightly bathtub-heavy fun headphone.
Here again, as so often, the question arises, for whom the PX7 are now actually interesting or could be. In a nutshell, the range is aimed at anyone who values high quality, good sound and a simple but contemporary design and wants to stand out from the mainstream of all the Beats & Bose protagonists in a strikingly unobtrusive way. At this point I come to the end and can recommend the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 to everyone with a clear conscience. Because here you buy a product in the long term and do not change after 1-2 years the device again from. Of course there are many competitors and you should always listen to them to find your personal favorite. Then the feel-good factor will work out in the end.
