Repair by a specialist
After an initial visual inspection, the repairer (thanks to the member of the Gerrepair Community!) came to the conclusion that the console had probably never even been opened by Nintendo. A good indicator of this is the fact that the tapes for the antennas have not been removed. However, these have to be removed in order to access the mainboard at all and it is almost unlikely that new tapes have been used for a mere inspection. Even under a magnifying glass, no traces could be detected on the screw heads. It is important to note that many screws are only pressed into the plastic with heat and are not screwed in at all at the factory due to time constraints.
The diagnosis made by Nintendo is understandable and correct, but if what you can see from the outside is enough for Nintendo to want to scrap the device, then they wouldn’t even need to offer such a service, including sending it in. There is visible damage, but what is really defective could have been cleaned quite easily or, in my opinion, replaced cheaply.

The sliding rail was ordered from a specialist and cost the end customer around 30 euros. Mind you, this was from normal retailers, where third parties have already made a lot of money. As the manufacturer, Nintendo should perhaps pay a few cents at most. Nintendo should therefore have spent even less on the repair, especially as trained personnel can replace it in just a few minutes!

Repair history
First I’ll show you the photos from the workshop of the old rails, where you can see that not even the moisture indicators were triggered, because there was no defect on the mainboard!
The spare part had also arrived in the meantime, so the repair could begin:
- Cleaning Joy-Con
- Replacing the Joy-Con sliding rail
- Replacing the Switch connector slide rail
The Joy-Con was also cleaned as the 4 buttons were a little sticky. However, there were no traces of liquid on the board underneath. The slide rail on the Switch side could have been done without replacing the connector, but as the connector on the replacement slide rail was quite loose, the split pin was removed and the specialist was able to fit the replacement connector onto the original rail.
Expert’s assessment and conclusion
What would have been feasible on the service side is a repair in which a new slide rail would have been built into the Switch and, in my opinion, the Joy-Con would also have been completely replaced. The right Joy-Con now sits a little tighter than the left one, as the parts had to be partially replaced. Subjectively, however, you can tell that the modified Joy-Con now sits even better than the original, which is quite impressive. However, Nintendo never had the Switch open in its life, but was only interested in a pure replacement from the start.
To remind ourselves of this once again: Instead of helping customers and unscrewing the console at least once in the service department in order to then replace a dirt-cheap cent part after a real diagnosis, only the exchange by means of a refurbished console is offered across the board, but then the customer’s original device must remain with the manufacturer and is supposedly “professionally disposed of” by Nintendo then professionally repairing it for a few cents and reselling it to the next customer again at a high price!
That’s not just cheeky, it’s perfidious money-grubbing and Nintendo is probably on very thin ice legally. Just the statement about “disposing”, for which there is of course no proof. Yes, how could there be? Unless you consider the invoice to the successor as proof of disposal. Incidentally, the “disposal” would even have been done secretly and tacitly if no explicit enquiries had been made!
As with Asus, you can only shake your head and draw the only possible conclusions for yourself as a customer and buyer by weighing up before you buy whether you want to participate in this recycling cycle at all and thus contribute to maximizing Nintendo’s profits. Because for Nintendo, the customer is just the stupid cow that is milked. Several times over, of course.
