Fine, the monitor has to fix it in the end and provide the right vision. But what do you actually put on the table? I was looking for an extra-wide monitor for the somewhat outlandish (and I’m sure decadent) selfie with NfS Underground 2 and a few other games (like Days Gone), and ended up buying the Samsung Odyssey G9. However, I have to say a few words about this part, which was not sponsored.
It’s a real whopper and you need a lot of space to begin with. What does first mean, you actually always need it, even later when setting up and using it. And for the very skeptical: store the box and note how everything was packed, because there will certainly be quite a few who send this monster back again. I am, however, capable of suffering and have bravely endured the circus with the firmware updates and Samsung’s quirky homepage.
G-Sync works now, but it will be tight for AMD cards. Not even HDR works properly, which is why I decided at some point to do without it in general. As nice as the monitor may be, Samsung didn’t cover itself with glory when it came to the implementation (both hardware and firmware) and I cursed many a euphoric review afterwards that had praised this monitor in the highest terms. But in the end, you also feel the difference between buying it yourself and having it benevolently put there.
It took me an unbelievable two days before this monitor was really operational and usable in the context of what I had in mind. Apart from the horrible and squeaky pre-calibration for LSD junkies ex works, which you can correct with the help of a spider, it was the annoying deficits in the details up to the firmware, which are actually a criterion for exclusion for a monitor in this price range. In the end, you wouldn’t even want to buy a washing machine from such a company.
But I managed it in the end, richer in experience and 1200 Euro poorer. What remains is the realization that thanks to such nice things as the flawless widescreen patch and the mod packs linked on the first page, even for old games completely new (optical) perspectives are once again possible, which make a replay of these classics almost a duty.
The nice thing about games like NFS Underground 2 is that you can get them to run on any cheaper graphics card, even in such a killer resolution. It should also be clear that the monitor is not worth it for daily work. Apart from the curvature, where you can’t get a straight line drawn without a guaranteed headache, it’s a pure gaming, fun monitor in this dimension. If you don’t have a second PC or monitor, it’s better to leave it alone. But for my purpose, at the end of the day, it’s just about the ideal hardware.
And even if the inclined reader prefers to have fun with 16:9 and only takes the suggestions with the mod pack – I can only recommend to play the game all over again. And to make the whole thing a little bit faster, I integrated one of my tools, which helps you to get into the game a little bit faster and to shorten some ways. And no, it’s not the coach, that sort of thing is rather characterless nonsense especially on LAN. But it’s ideal for creating your own profile. Lock, stock and barrel.
