Summary and conclusion
Visually, I like the Minisforum UM340 and the built-in technology was also convincing. Not only has the Ryzen 5 3450U been accommodated in just under 0.75 liters, but also sufficient cooling and a lot of ports. Even under high load, the system never gets annoyingly loud and the fan is hardly noticeable during normal operation, while the temperatures are still kept in check quite well. The heatsink for NVMe SSD and voltage converter are a nice extra. The recently tested SER3 with Ryzen 7 3750H is close on its heels, at least in terms of CPU performance. I consider the integration of a small microphone to be a curious gimmick, especially since the quality is not very good.
However, some points leave reason for criticism, because my copy had an incompatible version of the Radeon software to the graphics drivers installed. Although I just had to download it again from AMD’s website and install it over it, but such an error should be noticeable. I also think that the product page should show and describe exactly what I get. The specification with 65 watts is simply not true.
As a pure barebone without RAM and SSD, Minisforum charges about 335€ including customs clearance for the UM340. For the variant with 8GB RAM + 256GB SSD you want 389€ and for the biggest available version with 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD you will have to pay 479€. Depending on how cheap you can get RAM and SSD, you can build a complete system with the barebone at a reasonable price. The change from two 1G LAN ports to one 2.5G port is of course either an advantage or disadvantage depending on the intended use, but the basic framework was convincing in my tests anyway.
The otherwise here placed box with the price comparison is unfortunately not possible with this item, because the UM340 is not categorized. Therefore, here are the direct links from Geizhals.de:
