Microphone and features
The Meze Boom Mic is a microphone specially developed for the 99 Classics and other Meze headphones, which is ideal for gamers, home office professionals or virtual meetings. It has been designed to complement the excellent sound quality of Meze headphones with equally high-quality voice transmission.
The Meze Boom Mic is compatible with various platforms and devices, including PC, consoles such as PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch and all laptops and smartphones with 3.5 mm audio jacks or a combined TRSS jack. It comes with a Y-adapter that allows simultaneous use of audio and microphone, which is particularly useful for devices with separate audio and microphone connections. The connection is made via a standard 3.5 mm jack, which makes the microphone universally applicable and ensures compatibility with most headphones and devices.
The sensitivity of the microphone is around -44 ± 3 dB, which enables precise voice recording without over-amplifying or distorting the voice. The frequency range of the microphone is between 100 Hz and 10 kHz, which is designed for clear transmission of speech and filters out low frequencies that are often perceived as disturbing. As a result, the Meze Boom Mic offers well-balanced sound transmission, which is particularly useful for virtual conferences and gaming sessions where precise communication is required.
The Meze Boom Mic is characterized by its high-quality workmanship, which harmonizes with Meze’s design principles. It features an aluminum body that is made of CNC-machined material and offers a durable yet lightweight construction. The microphone boom is flexible so that it can be easily positioned to ensure optimal voice transmission. The design is minimalist and ergonomic, fitting in well with the overall look of the Meze headphones without detracting from the elegant appearance of the headphones.
The microphone itself is a condenser microphone with an omnidirectional pattern that picks up the voice clearly from all directions. This design ensures that the Boom Mic remains steady even when the head is moved and provides consistently high sound quality. This omnidirectional orientation is particularly beneficial for users who move around a lot while working or playing. However, it may be slightly more susceptible to background noise in very noisy environments, so it is best suited to quieter rooms or should be supplemented with additional noise-canceling software. The volume control in the microphone Y-cable for the headphones is practical and has relatively good synchronization, the mute switch is certainly useful, but somewhat awkwardly placed. I prefer to use the mute button on the PC.
The Meze Boom Mic adds a high-quality microphone solution to the headphones to create a fully-fledged headset that is ideal for both gaming and professional purposes. With its flexible adaptability, high-quality workmanship and clear voice transmission, it offers seamless integration into a high-quality audio world and also ensures that users can not only enjoy music at a high level, but also do not have to compromise on communication.
Audio measurement and sound example
Now let’s first take a look at the microphone measurement, which I deliberately carried out on the onboard audio of my PC in order to provide the user with a more practical approach. The bias voltage supplied by the PC for the electret capsule is completely sufficient and it is anything but quiet. The signal-to-noise ratio is excellent and there is no noise. The slider now enables a better comparison between the smoothed and unsmoothed curve of the measured frequency response. I will certainly keep this in the future, as it is quite clear and easier to compare than individual graphs.
Of course, the one curve does not give a subjective impression of the sound, you have to do it yourself. Positioning is relatively simple and not rocket science, but you always have to bear in mind that the microphone could also pick up conversations in the room because it is omnidirectional and quite sensitive.
Here is the result, which can be seen (and heard):
