If you can pair excellent headphones with a good microphone without creating a fixed headset, thus remaining flexible in use and still easily outperforming most gaming headsets in terms of sound even without software ballast, then the manufacturer has done everything right. Meze Audio pairs the popular Meze 99 Classics from 2015 with a really good boom microphone and offers fun hi-fi for gamers too. Or to put it in a nutshell: extremely high-resolution and stable drivers with a lowered boom meet a suitable microphone with almost podcast quality.
I had already tested the Meze 99 Neo almost 7 years ago as a loaner and thought the iteration at the time was pretty decent, but had never managed to take a closer look at the “original”. Of course, this can be made up for if you suddenly find such headphones in combination with a boom microphone. This is exactly what we are looking at today, because I can already spoil the fact that you can easily compete with all the so-called gaming headsets, which usually offer less for a lot of money and then usually rely on software botox for the sound. The combination tested today doesn’t need these crutches at all, but can be operated honestly and resource-savingly even on the onboard sound of a mainboard. Despite all the spoilers, let’s take a quick look back, because that’s always part of the process when you’re testing a classic like this. The Meze 99 Classics headphones were launched back in 2015 by Meze Audio, a Romanian company, at a time when nobody claimed to want to own such a crossover project. The company was founded in 2009 by Antonio Meze, a passionate designer and musician. His aim was to develop headphones that are not only technically high-quality, but also impress with their timeless design and exceptional materials. The company places particular emphasis on the combination of precision craftsmanship and sonic excellence. Each pair of headphones is manufactured with a housing made of real wood, which gives each model an individual look and a warm, natural sound. The Meze 99 Classics headphones have a 40 mm driver unit, cover a frequency range of 15 Hz to 25 kHz and have an impedance of 32 ohms, which makes them easy to use on a wide range of devices, even mobile devices. With a very high sensitivity of 103 dB at 1 mW and 1 kHz, they offer high volume at low power, even onboard sound. A sensitivity as high as that of the Meze 99 Classics means that the headphones can still deliver an impressive volume.
This also makes them particularly suitable for use with mobile devices such as smartphones, which do not deliver as much power as dedicated amplifiers. Scope of delivery and unboxing
Times are changing and Meze naturally has to tap into new groups of buyers. The Meze 99 Classics headphones with Boom Mic therefore offer a comprehensive package designed for music lovers, gamers and professionals alike. The headphones are supplied in a robust EVA carrying case that ensures safe transportation or can be disposed of immediately, depending on the user and application profile.
Two detachable cables are included: a shorter cable with a simple microphone and remote control for mobile use (that’s all the simple part is good for) and a longer one for home use, but without a microphone. A 6.3 mm adapter and an airplane adapter are also included, which underlines the versatility of the headphones. I would also have liked a balanced cable with a matching 4.4 mm plug, but thankfully I have enough of these in my cable collection. Just a tip for Meze.

Yes, the fun doesn’t come cheap, but with a little searching you can find the combination for around 350 euros. Of course, that’s a lot of wood for the wood, but a Beyerdynamic MMX 300 (the name is also a program) for 300 euros isn’t really any cheaper. Woodworm versus plastic bomber? Exactly that! The look and feel are simply an included factor in this price range, as the Meze combination is also excellent in terms of performance.
