Quality presets
In the PC version of “Horizon Forbidden West”, players have the option to customize the visual experience through various graphics presets. The graphics presets affect the overall image quality, performance and immersion. In the following, I will give an overview of the typical graphics presets you might expect in a game like “Horizon Forbidden West” and explain their effects on the visuals and system requirements and also show them in the multiple slider. Because the visual differences here are much greater than with supersampling and anti-aliasing.
Very high
This is the ultimate visual experience. Every aspect of the graphics is pushed to the maximum, including ultra-high resolution textures, realistic lighting effects, and complex shadows. Environmental detail and visibility are maximized, and additional graphical effects such as enhanced water rendering and advanced physics effects are enabled. This preset requires the best available hardware to ensure smooth gameplay and can lead to significant frame rate drops on less powerful systems.
High
Significant improvements in all areas of the graphics. High-resolution textures, complex shadows, improved particle effects and vivid lighting contribute to an immersive gaming experience. The environmental details are significantly increased, with more vegetation and architectural details. This preset is designed to provide excellent image quality on more powerful hardware, which may come at the expense of frame rate if the hardware is not up to scratch.
Medium
There is a middle ground here that offers a balanced mix of image quality and performance. Textures have a higher resolution than in the low preset, and there is more detail in the environment. Shadow quality and particle effects are improved, but without the full detail of the higher settings. Suitable for most modern PCs, it offers a good balance between visual quality and playability without a significant drop in frame rate.
Low
With this preset, most visual effects are reduced or minimized. Textures may appear blurred or lacking in detail, shadows are often coarse or non-existent, and the amount of detail in the environment is greatly reduced. Particle effects and lighting are simplified. But it is ideal for players with older or less powerful hardware. This preset aims to ensure an acceptable frame rate by reducing the graphical quality.
Very Low
With this preset, almost all visual effects are reduced and lowered to an absolute minimum. Textures may appear blurred or lacking in detail, shadows are non-existent and the level of detail in the surroundings is close to zero. Particle effects are almost completely absent and the lighting is extremely simplified. Or, to put it in a nutshell: complete pixel grime.

The benchmark scene
The whole thing is pretty worst-case and I had to play for several hours to get such low frame rates. The FPS are usually significantly higher than what I measured here in and on the water, but I’d rather do it this way than show fair-weather benchmarks and the reader can’t believe that it still hops with the same hardware. Since it’s a separate scene, I made it a little longer than usual at almost 2 minutes so that the average value remains reproducible and representative.
