The whole cryptocurrency bubble keeps inflating and the value of many of these “currencies” has skyrocketed extremely, even if there is always a dip in between. This month alone, NVIDIA has sold $30 million worth of CMP-series cards to Hut 8 Mining Corp. for example. By then, the seizure of 300 stolen NVIDIA CMP 30HX cryptocurrency mining cards in Hong Kong was a minor item. Now, in keeping with the boom, Bitmain has teased the Antminer E9 Ethereum miner, which is said to have a whopping hash rate of 3 GH/s.
The now unveiled Bitmain Antminer E9 is an ASIC-only Ethereum-focused miner that reportedly delivers a hash rate of up to 3 GH/s when Ethereum mining. That much mining power is roughly equivalent to 25 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090s (120 MH/s per 3090) or 32 RTX 3080s (94 MH/s per 3080). In terms of currently available NVIDIA mining cards, the Antminer E9 is even equivalent to 115 pieces of CMP 30HXs (26 MH/s per 30HX). Of course, the Antimer E9 will need a lot of energy with 2,556W, but it has an efficiency of 0.85 J/M. If you would subtract the electricity costs in Germany, this would even give a fat plus of up to 120 Euro per day (depending on the energy provider and the daily exchange rate of the currency).
If the advertised hash rate of 3 GH/s is really true, this would make the Antminer E9 the most powerful ASIC cryptocurrency miner on the market. It would even outperform the Linzhi Phoenix Miner, which has a hash rate of 2.6 GH/s and is also less energy efficient at 3000W. However, this new Antminer should also be correspondingly expensive, as there are currently rumours of over $20,000 for the E9. In comparison, the Linzhi Phoenix would be almost a bargain in the $11,300-$13,700 price range. And it would be more efficient and, most importantly, cheaper than individual graphics cards. Which brings us full circle to the title of this news.
