Benchmark Scene
Because I had to finish my article in a rather sporty time frame, I could only use a relatively early scene of the game for my tests. This is an early area called “The Riverlands” where it’s nice and quiet after a fight. I recorded the scene, which lasts about 27 seconds, in case anyone wants to recreate the benchmark.
It is quite possible, and even very likely, that there will be significantly more challenging scenes in the course of the game. However, the selected scene matches the FPS quite well with those that I have seen on average in my few hours of gameplay so far. Furthermore, the GPU was well utilized in every quality level over the entire scene.
Test system
Out of interest, I also installed the game once on our “family computer”, which is equipped with a moderately overclocked Ryzen 5 1400 (3.8GHz), 16 GB RAM (3000CL16) and a GeForce GTX 970. Undoubtedly an old and relatively weak system, but still used by many users in a similar form and thus relevant. In 1080p with preset “Low”, FSR on “Ultra-Quality” and activated Reflex, the game runs smoothly with an average of over 70 FPS without looking really bad. It’s a bit of a surprise to me that you can actually enjoy the game on such old hardware.
All further tests were performed on my usual test system:
Performance
The different presets scale surprisingly well. Each quality level brings about 20% more FPS compared to the next higher level.
Overall, the game runs surprisingly smooth for a ported console title. Apparently, Sony learned something from the Horizon Zero Dawn disaster and other failures and did a much better job with this game right from the start. This is not only because it runs smoothly on my relatively fast test system, but also because it is also perfectly playable with the small quad-core Ryzen and the old GTX 970 and does not look bad at all on low settings.
