Cleaning and re-paste
First remove the old paste and pay attention to all the small components next to the chip that you would rather leave on. You are on the safe side with a soft cloth, cotton buds and finally a final cleaning with some isopropanol (no methylated spirits!). It is important that the silicone disappears.
Then apply a new, more durable paste to the card, in my case the Apex from Alphacool. The MX-6 from Arctic also works. It is important that the viscosity is sufficient, but not too high, in order to create as thin and even a layer as possible when pressed on. The final assembly is carried out in reverse order and please do not forget to remove the plug(s)! It goes without saying that the four screws should be tightened alternately on the long sides at the end and not screwed in all the way to the end stop. This distributes the paste better.
Temperatures
But what did this action really achieve? A lot, as the measurement with Furmark shows us. There is even a significant improvement in the GPU temperature (“GPU Edge”), which was not quite so extreme before! This value drops from around 73 °C ex-factory to 66 °C, which results in a delta of around 7 Kelvin and is even audible because the fans can be sent to relaxation mode. This is also half a galaxy for the average value. But what happens to the hotspot now?
The hotspot temperature drops from 103 °C to a moderate 78 to 79 °C. This corresponds to a delta of a whopping 24 to 25 Kelvin! And the delta between GPU edge and hotspot even drops from 30 Kelvin to the usual 14 to 15 Kelvin, which is also a very good value for air-cooled NVIDIA cards. The large RDNA3 cards from AMD are even slightly higher at 18 to 20 Kelvin due to the separation of the GFX chip and chiplets, but anything above 25 Kelvin is generally no longer acceptable, even with AMD. With the larger NVIDA chips, on the other hand, the delta must be well below 20 Kelvin, otherwise something is wrong.
Summary and conclusion
It’s always depressing to see how manufacturers drive an actually good product completely against the tree for just a few cents. This is neither acceptable nor tolerable. I will also be contacting NVIDIA again with the latest findings, because they should simply no longer allow their board partners to get away with this mess. I am not a friend of GLP, but in such a case the technical restrictions would at least have a sensible background and would make real sense.
We can see very clearly from the reduction of the hotspot what such an improvement brings and that keywords such as reliability or long-term use have a serious background for the customer. You can’t charge 1000 euros or more and then leave the customer to his own devices. Especially since the manufacturers, as the recent correspondence with Asus has already shown, are squirming and refusing because such a hotspot is “normal”. No, it is not, and neither is the use of inferior pastes. This is cost-cutting in the wrong place and is at the expense of the end consumer.
If one were to be rude and provocative, one could conclude that companies such as Asus, Manli and others purchase such pastes from the same bottler (adulterator). I’m pretty sure that the real paste manufacturers don’t offer such garbage in the first place if they’re serious. I haven’t found any of this stuff in the portfolios of companies like Honeywell, Dupont, 3M, Boyd and Ziitek. It must have been done by an external filler.
Of course I can’t “optimize” every card, I don’t have the time or the right trade. But I hope I was able to sensitize the readers, i.e. you, a little. Feedback is always welcome, also with regard to your hotspot temperatures. You are always welcome to contact me (please only by e-mail!), if you leave your telephone number, I will even call you back if you are interested, but everyone gets an answer. And if a manufacturer is reading this: google Honeywell and PTM 7950!
