Use with a non-streamer
Since I don’t stream and don’t plan to start in the near future, I quickly asked myself, “How do I actually test this device now?” Just because the device is called “Stream Deck” doesn’t necessarily mean you have to use it for streaming.
Putting different functions on a separate button without having to navigate through cumbersome menus with the mouse and then assigning a meaningful icon to the corresponding button can definitely make sense in situations other than streaming.
After some trial and error and browsing the store where you can get all sorts of plugins, icons, etc. for free, my stream deck looked like this:
Already somehow “misappropriated”, but since there is already a plugin for reading the HWInfo sensor values, I seem to be not the only one who likes such functionality. Since I don’t use my old Logitech G15 keyboard with the small display anymore and due to the switch to a single Ultrawide monitor I don’t have the possibility to display information about my hardware except via an ugly OSD, I already miss the additional display enormously. The Stream Deck absorbs this fact very well and it will certainly not be long before hardware information can also be displayed on the touch screen.
Other than that, I set up some Discord functions and a shortcut to Igor’s Lab. In addition to the volume controls for my Elgato microphone and output volume, I later installed another community plugin that I find extremely handy. I use both headphones and speakers on my gaming PC, and constantly switching between the default output device can be quite annoying at times. But thanks to the “Toggle Audio Device” plugin, this is done with a single button press.
In fact, such a stream deck makes sense for me personally even if you don’t actually want to stream. The freely configurable additional buttons and knobs are quickly occupied and the community tinkers with all sorts of useful plug-ins, with which you can also use the Stream Deck for completely different applications. From nonsense like a soundboard in Discord to shortcuts in productive environments, I can think of several use cases that have nothing to do with streaming and are much more comfortable with the Stream Deck.
