Not entirely without reason, criticism often arises that the whole lighting craze is completely useless and only unnecessarily drives up production costs. That’s exactly why the manufacturer Ducky still has models like the Ducky ONE 2 Skyline without disco lighting in its portfolio, and it’s exactly this serious nerd model that we want to test today. By the way, not entirely without ulterior motives, because the direct successor is almost just around the corner. Firstly, I can then directly compare the two later and secondly, the model tested today might even be available at a lower price in the sale.
I have to admit at this point that I have celebrated the illumination of input devices and generally PC components since everyone and have already installed cold light cathodes in my PC, where many of our readers still sat in elementary school and operated the slide rule. That’s why I bought the Logitech G15 right at release – one of the first, if not the first, gaming keyboard with backlit keys. Meanwhile, the whole RGB craze has really gotten out of hand and many buyers want devices without lighting back. Of course, you can almost always turn them off, but the additional price for the lighting is still estimated. The financial expenditure could also be invested in other features of a keyboard. For example, in a more solid construction and higher quality keycaps. This is exactly the approach Ducky takes with the ONE 2 Skyline tested today, among others.
The color scheme of the Skyline version reminds me strongly of the “Space Cadet Keyboard” by Symbolics, an absolute icon in the keyboard scene. If you are interested in such exotic oldschool keyboards, you should pay a visit to the Youtube channel Chyrosran22. As always, we start with the unboxing.
Unboxing
The compact box is actually not quite as serious with its colorful splashes of paint and looks rather kitschy.
After opening, we see a plastic cover and a foil – one of them could have been left out.
The plastic waste is put aside, and the full-size keyboard is already smiling at us.
Here again in its entirety and with the enclosed accessories, which I will come to in a moment.
The Ducky logo adorns the back, otherwise the keyboard is completely free of any lettering or logos.
I really like the color scheme and feel at first glance.
At the top right are some additional keys, e.g. for volume settings.
Cherry MX-Black switches are installed in this model, the switches are embedded in the case and not attached.
Accessories include a keycap removal tool, a Quick Start Guide, and a set of keycaps for customizing the keyboard.
All keycaps are made as “PBT Double-Shot”, so definitely already something higher quality and not a cheap print.
I will discuss the other features in the next section.
