Summary and conclusion
Of course, RAM kits are only ever specified for operation in the XMP profile and anything beyond that is simply luck. It’s just that we can’t test kits in a vacuum, and we can’t give awards based on specifications – at least that’s not my personal claim. The fact that Corsair even exchanged my kit again speaks for our contact with the manufacturer. On the other hand, it is unfortunate that the second kit is just as modest as the first when it comes to overclocking potential.
However, the fact that the modules individually can be run stably on DDR5-7800 and even partly more, gives hope for improvement. Possibly the training settings of the BIOS version used are not yet optimized for Corsair’s own board layout and maybe a newer BIOS will manage to release the clock brake in dual-channel operation. Only at the time of the test, this was unfortunately not yet the case and for better comparability, we performed the final overclocking and benchmarks with BIOS version 0813 of the Asus Maximus Z790 Hero motherboard.
The modules themselves with their cooler and design not only make a high-quality optical impression, but can also convince with the lowest temperatures in the cooler test. Also under the cooler, the modules know how to impress with their component selection and own 10-layer design of the PCB. This is taller than a reference layout, but few potential Dominator kit customers are likely going to think of peeling their sticks and replacing the heatsink anyway. On the one hand, it works very well and on the other hand, the integrated LED lighting is a real gem in any system, even though we know it from other SKUs and therefore did not shine a light on it again today – pun intended.
Aside from the small number of customers who also want to play around with clocks and timings themselves, the 7200 Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB kit is primarily aimed at those who are simply looking for a fast DDR5 kit to install that performs flawlessly in XMP mode and looks great doing it. At higher clock rates, even XMP often becomes a gamble and therefore it makes more sense, especially for users of 4-DIMM mainboards, to choose a slightly “slower” kit, like the one tested today. As a premium kit for plug-and-play in XMP operation, we can therefore recommend the “7200 Dominators” with a clear conscience.
The RAM kit was kindly provided to us by Corsair without any obligation to publish. In addition, there was no influence on the tests and their results.
