Pixel response times vs. overshoot @ max. refresh rate
OLED-typically, we don’t have to look at overdrive settings in terms of response times and overshoot today. Nevertheless, I had to make an interesting discovery that shook my basic statement – “OLED panels have no problem with overshoot”. Take a look at my measurements first, then I’ll explain – why.

The lower the FPS or frame rate turns out, the more overshoot I can measure. How can this be? That was also completely unclear to me at the beginning. If you look at the measurement results of the other OLED monitors, you can see that there can be very small overshoot (single-digit percentage range). This is outside the perceptible range. The LG 27GR95QE, on the other hand, manages that you can actually see the overshoot at 60 Hz. Not really disturbing, but it’s there! And what’s the reason for that? The panel produces overshoot in the single-digit percentage range, but this overshoot is not corrected immediately, but only after the current refresh cycle. Thus, the low overshoot portion is unnecessarily prolonged.
Example: At 240 Hz (240 FPS) in the grayscale 0 to 224, there is 13.2 percent overshoot. In reality, it is rather three to five percent, which is displayed for a full 4.1 ms. Thus, the overshoot is stretched, so to speak. And, the lower the refresh rate, e.g. 60 Hz = 16.7 ms/frame, the longer three to five percent overshoot is stretched. Thus also perceptible. I hope that I could explain this understandably. I have raised the issue with LG Germany and it should have arrived at HQ by now. From my point of view, this should be solvable via a firmware update.
Don’t worry: If you gamble beyond 100 Hz, you won’t notice any overshoot. I can take away the fear of any possible buyer of the LG 27GR95QE!
