Haptics, optics and disadvantages
From the haptics, the PBT caps (Attention: Personal and therefore subjective feeling) already feel much more valuable. The material structure is slightly rougher than the ordinary/printed coating and therefore offers more grip. In terms of typing, the keys only feel marginally different, which probably depends primarily on the underlying switch type. But the caps sound a bit different and especially with the enclosed silicone rings the touch is of course a bit quieter. I also have two soundfiles available below. Of course, I can’t evaluate the higher longevity within the scope of such an article, but since no coating can peel off here, at most the surface structure will rub off a bit in the long run and become a bit smoother accordingly.
Therefore, we now come to the optics and the two with known disadvantage of the elaborately produced caps. For this purpose I left some keys with the original caps on all following pictures. In fact, with all-red illumination, only one of the two drawbacks is noticeable – around the icons, some illumination shines through the pink outer layer (I assume it would NOT be visible with a darker/blacker key):
However, the fact that the buttons themselves glow so red is due to the light reflected from below and the exposure time of the shot. In real life, it honestly looks pretty good!
With white illumination, another disadvantage is noticeable, which, however, is directly related to the color of the outer layer of the keycaps – the symbol, which should actually shine in the color of the underlying LED, is somewhat distorted. In the case of the pink caps, the translucent light appears rather reddish-pink, although it was set completely white in the following:
You can also see this clearly in the detail. All keys are set to white illumination:
I’m not that savvy with colors, but interestingly there is no color difference when you set the lighting to one of the colors that the pink hue is apparently mixed from. So red and construction (turquoise also fits). Possibly related to what colors the material can reflect? If anyone in the community can explain this – would be interesting to know.
