Optics, feel and wearing comfort
The body of the Corsair HS55 Wireless Core is made of sleek black ABS (matte, no piano finish) with light metal accents (black painted cover with grooves on the shells along with chrome-look logo). There is nothing more to write about it and it is definitely not a disaster visually. Thus, the HS55 Wireless Core One will not attract much attention, neither positive nor negative. Haptically, it’s all just mediocre, but well, it can’t get any more expensive than that.
The fit is good, especially since the headband is a true three-axis solution. Adjustable are the length (the strap locks noticeably), the horizontal rotation to the head axis, as well as the vertical tilt angle. This pleases and is really easy to fit, even up to hat size 62. However, it doesn’t get much bigger than that, and everything was already at the end stop for me as well. Large heads should therefore rather refrain from buying, otherwise there will be pressure points.
The headset fits like a glove with a bit of preparation, which is also noticeable later in the reproducible sound, although I will leave its quality aside here. But it sounds more or less always the same. To test this, I simply placed the headset on the measurement setup several times and got almost identical measurement results each time. The optimum setting is therefore not an issue for the time being. And once the part fits, even a proper headbang can’t make the headphones go into orbit. It continues to fit like a glove.
The headband is well and thickly padded on the inside, although the PU leather imitation already encourages sweating. The gap dimensions of the half-shells and the glued joints on the headband are ok overall, but not exactly upper class. You could have expected more for almost 130 Euros. It’s all neatly crafted, but it’s not much of a breakthrough in terms of haptics and looks.
You have to like the ear cup pads, especially since you can easily remove them for hygienic reasons. But more about that in the teardown. Otherwise, there is nothing exciting to report and we can devote ourselves to the connections.
Connectivity
Corsair places the controls at the bottom of the edges of both ear cups. From left to right, we see the USB-C charging port, the light gray volume dial, which reminds me a bit too much of a mouse scroll wheel with its grid and haptics (big play) (and looks completely out of place), and the mute button.
On the right side, the finger then finds the Bluetooth multi-function button, a status LED that informs about the battery status and the connection, among other things, as well as the power button. The microphone boom is located on the left ear cup and has a length of 13 cm.
I’ll come back to the retractable microphone and its sound in a separate paragraph later, because there are also sound samples.
