Gaming in Full HD / 1080p
1080p is still one of the most popular resolutions, especially for competitive games where every extra frame can be important. While the configurations of an i9 with an RTX 3090 for this is probably not a realistic use case, CPU limiting in these titles remains an important factor even with smaller hardware components.
The ranking of CPUs at Average and 1% Low FPS remains the same to the larger resolutions in all titles, but the gaps are widening. Alder Lake can generate up to 40 or 30 percentage points more performance than Comet Lake with the same RAM settings and the same number of cores. You’ve got to let that sink in! It is also noticeable that almost all CPUs achieve the same performance in Cyberpunk 2077. Here the RAM probably plays a much bigger role than the CPU.
When it comes to frame times in 1080p, the new 12th generation is also clearly the smoothest and has the fewest outliers when it comes to frame times. The 30 MB of L3 cache given to the new Alder Lake CPUs is almost double the 16 MB of the predecessor. This will also be an important factor in avoiding requests to the now less responsive RAM as often as possible.
In terms of energy efficiency, the 12900K can now go one better and place itself in first place in two titles when you put the achieved FPS into proportion. But also the absolute consumption confirms the good reputation of Alder Lake with about one third less power consumption than the previous Rocket Lake CPUs.
