Optics and haptics
After all, 11.5 kilos of acoustic cheerfulness are distributed over a length of 54 cm, a depth of 40 cm and a height of 14 cm including the mounting frame and rubber feet when set up horizontally. It is mandatory to take into account when placing under the sofa or other furniture. In addition, of course, you have to make sure that you do not “sit through” anything here. Otherwise, you have the acoustic feeling on a direct path to the body, which might be intentional in the rarest of cases.
The part can be hidden anywhere as long as there is an opening for the power cord. If necessary, the subwoofer even fits on top of a cabinet. But then, preferably on four decoupling rubber “hedgehogs”, it is better to put him on his back and let him radiate upwards. These parts are available cheaply in the accessories and work wonders.
If you have a little more space under the sofa, you can also try spikes that can be easily glued to the bottom side and provide a little more ground clearance, if you have it available.
In upright mode or wall mounting, the rotated dimensions apply analogously and you should stick four rubber feet on the respective surface or use the “hedgehogs” (damper). The two metal rails on the side with the speaker opening are a good indicator of the minimum distance to be maintained. This is also essential for the free movement of the very wide deflecting diaphragm and should only be understood as a minimum value, especially in set-up mode. Here, every centimeter more brings a significant improvement, also when it comes to the acoustic “integration” of the radiated area. With non-solid walls, only the neighbor suffers, with sideboards often the whole piece of furniture, including its contents. I have voluntarily added 2 cm here (picture below) so that the contents of the side compartments of the massive furniture, which after all weighs well over 100 kilos, do not bounce along in ecstasy.
And just by the way: Pointing the bass reflex tube upwards when you want to operate the unit standing up with a depth of only 40 cm is definitely a bit brave. At the very least, you should have a good bit set with Torx in case something does fall in. Or you can insert a small plug for safety, which can even bring advantages in terms of sound. In which position the part then performs how, but I’ll save that for a little later.
I already wrote about the white or black glossy finish at the beginning of this article, and there is nothing to complain about. The very torsion-resistant MDF body follows the current design language of the nuPro and nuSub devices and is excitingly unexciting. I’ll go into more detail about the chassis in the teardown, but the visual impressions of the 22.4 cm woofer will suffice for now. As always, I also have my own photo gallery that you can browse through:
Operation and connectivity
Let’s leave the app aside for now and see what can be connected and operated manually. The line-in is self-explanatory, here we also remember the RCA cable with the angled plugs. Pairing with the matching system or the proprietary wireless module from Nubert (nuConnect trX) for older systems or those not equipped with Wi-Fi is done via a separate button, whereby the manual explains everything so nicely in detail that I don’t even need to delve into the text here. If you buy one of these, you’re in good hands, and if you only read the review, you won’t be bored. But it’s intuitive to master and really simple.
This also applies to the percentage level adjustment or the definition of the upper frequency via the control with pushbutton function for switching the assignment. The rest is explained by the respective color of the LED. Yes, it is easy and there is even the possibility to adjust the frequency in 5 Hz steps. If you are looking for a mechanical phase switch, you are out of luck for now, because it is only available in the app. There is still a mechanical off switch for this, even if it is usually not accessible.
I switch off the whole system with suitable radio sockets, then you also save the up to 2 watts in standby with activated radio module (otherwise < 0.5 watts with analog connection). There is no need to write more about the exterior, but we want to open the subwoofer and take a look at the details. So it’s all about the inner values.
