Group therapy
If you want to control and regulate several radiators in one room or several rooms with the same user behavior together, you can use the group function. Here, the parent group inherits the properties to all child ones, i.e. the associated thermostats. This is extremely practical, especially if even different heating periods are to be set, or if, for example, one does not want to let a granny apartment get cold on vacation, but regulates the rest down.
The creation of the group and editing is somewhat redundantly regulated, but what the heck Better one mask more than one too few. Fine-tuning then works for this in the same way as it does for all the individual controllers. So I don’t have to explain that in detail again, because we just had that on the previous page.
Control and monitoring via the apps
Of course, you can configure the remote access of the FRITZ!Box on via the browser, but on the rather small displays it does much better with one or more apps. Available are MyFRITZ! (below left) for WLAN use or Smart Home (below right) for WLAN and mobile use outside the home.
Smart Home is very easy to configure and finds a FRITZ!Box anywhere in the world as long as there is Internet access. Then the whole thing can not only be monitored, but even reconfigured analog to the settings menu. This is good for forgetful people and all those who are not sure whether the stove is really off even after the third run back. At least with the heater, you can also treat it from now on. The 24-hour history graph for room temperature is also available here in the app.
Summary and conclusion
Positive: The AVM FRITZ! Dect 302 is intuitive and easy to use, has convenient dimensions and is very simple to install. It does not require a cloud or online registration and runs in the home network even without the Internet if necessary. Three AA batteries will easily last for more than one heating period, and the display is also quite sufficient for simple monitoring. The device fits seamlessly into the product portfolio and both the management via the FRITZ!Box, as well as the use of the apps are solved in an exemplary manner.
Negative: What bothers me a bit is the disproportion of price and functionality. With only one target temperature, you are already moving in a minimalistic environment here, which is really a pity. With at least two different targets, this shortcoming would certainly be quickly eliminated. The speed at which changes and feedback arrive is also still far too high. The functioning window open detection is very location-dependent and the portfolio lacks simple temperature sensors without the big bells and whistles. What is also sorely lacking is an integrated or external humidity meter for the room air. With an external module you could even check the temperature of the respective wall and thus ensure that you do not fall below the dew point temperature. Only then would that be really smart.
The current prices of almost 100 Euros unfortunately make this device a non-buy story because it is simply not worth the price. Then rather cloud-governing with China-mindedness and Xi spy package, but you get at least two to three thermostats for the same money. My investment of well over 600 euros is not yet plausible from a commercial point of view, but I will only notice this when I come to the next statement. It would certainly have been possible to achieve at least the same goal with considerably less money. Certainly not quite as convenient and easy, but it works without the luxury markup.
That such thermostats are worthwhile, I still know from my first attempt in 2020 with the China goods from Alibaba, because in 2021 I have then in contrast almost 30% more consumption. I do hope that now in 2022, it will level off to the 2020 level. Because then the savings at today’s prices is already well over 1000 euros and also the Fritz would still have a golden nose, but at least one that has also paid off. I will let you times an update in due course. In the meantime, I’m going to look for two more Dect 302s, but they shouldn’t cost more than 80 euros. Because slowly the fun really stops and I switch to anger mode.
