It looks like AMD may be switching from using fish names for its products to using crystalline rock names. A shipping label recently posted by well-known hardware leaker Harukaze5179 suggests that AMD is using the new codename “Cuarzo” for its existing Navi 3X GPUs. According to reports, this label was found at the company’s Canadian headquarters when the corresponding products were shipped to the company’s labs worldwide.
AMD has thus probably decided to name its new Navi models after the Spanish word “Cuarzo”, which means “quartz” in German. The models are divided into three categories: Cuarzo Rojo, Cuarzo Verde and Cuarzo Azul, meaning Red Quartz, Green Quartz and Blue Quartz respectively. It’s unclear why AMD decided on these names, but compared to the company’s previous experiences, these names are definitely better than “Pink Sardine” or “Hotpink Bonefish”.
It is unfortunate that the SKUs listed on the shipping label do not indicate a new release in development. Despite this, there is speculation that AMD may be planning to integrate the Navi 32 GPU package into mobile variants, as indicated by the listings of the “board D716” and “XEM” variants. However, this is currently only a rumor. There is no concrete evidence in the form of leaks to support this assumption, but it would close the large gap between the Navi 33 and Navi 31 mobile SKUs.
