Summary
AMD has managed (at least for now) to put the obligatory performance crown on itself again, even if the lead is not quite as extreme as some areas show and some had dreamed of. But it’s worth taking a closer look. Even though the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X is unrivaled as a number cruncher and plays in a league of its own, it might be tight for gaming later on. Because the lead over the Intel Core i9-12900K (I unfortunately don’t own a KS) in gaming isn’t quite so big that it couldn’t possibly be beaten by an upcoming Core i9-13900K. Intel will still be clearly behind in most real workloads, but it could quickly become very tight in the partial load range, such as gaming, where the clock rates and the IPC of individual cores are important.
Nevertheless, AMD manages to beat the monolithic Intel Core i9-12900K impressively in places with an MCM design and the two chiplets. In some situations with a full computing load it is downright declassifying, also in terms of efficiency, in gaming it is then rather game-dependent. But the trend is in favor of AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950X, which finally managed to get rid of its predecessor’s glaring disadvantage in gaming compared to high-clocking 8-cores like the Ryzen 7 5800X(3D). The older cache monster really whets the appetite for a similar Ryzen 7800X(3D), which certainly does not only fit into the gaping hole in the name scheme by chance.
The Ryzen 9 7950X is by no means a cheap device, and the price of 840 Euros incl. VAT is not bad either. (MSRP) testifies to AMD’s new self-confidence. If you add the adequate base in the form of an X670E or at least X670 board as well as fast DDR5 RAM, then it really gets expensive. That’s why we don’t give it the buy tip, but the Editor’s Choice, because you simply have to duly appreciate such a piece of brute fast silicon. Power consumption or not, I will also use this current system as a new test platform with NVIDIA’s upcoming GeForce RTX 4090, because the fastest card then also needs the fastest and most modern base. Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to officially test the cheaper Ryzen 9 7900X as a similar alternative, but that can be done later.
The Ryzen 7 7700X is a bit different, also in terms of price. At 497 euros including VAT. this CPU is also anything but a bargain, but it is fast. Most of the time, you also have the Intel Core i7-12700K under control quite well during gaming, which is surprising. The predecessor Ryzen 7 5800X was much more difficult and the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which is at least slightly faster for gaming, is unfortunately not a bargain either. However, you get a modern CPU in the mid-range with the Ryzen 7 7700X for a probably future-proof socket that could still be up-to-date in a few years. However, you can already get the comparable Intel Core i7-12700K from around 440 Euros street price, especially since it also supports DDR4 RAM. Nevertheless, a new purchase with socket LGA 1700 and a current Intel board as a new acquisition would be a real dead end, because after Raptor Lake, this socket is also dead as a doornail.
The Ryzen 7 7700X is much more efficient, hardly slower in games than its fat brother and thus also worth an honest buy tip. i can only recommend to wait for the B650(E) boards as well, in order not to fall too much out of the frame in terms of price. Here, waiting and reading proper tests could definitely pay off in order not to overstretch the wallet. After all, graphics cards are still coming this year. From this point of view, it won’t really be cheap here either together with new memory. But those who are sure to get along for a while with their current graphics card are welcome to grab this one. It’s good and should certainly become a bit cheaper after the initial euphoria.
Clever sole decision makers are of course waiting for Intel’s 13th generation. If they are very clever, they will also wait for a possible new AMD’ Ryzen 7 V-cache monster. Only then does the experienced gamer with the endless patience really strike, but who can and wants to wait that long? Well, I can help you bridge the time with various tests, but once the saliva is running, there is probably no stopping most people. Now, or then, with Intel. Nevertheless, it is always worth waiting and of course, as always, have not said anything, but just got out the pre-Christmas speculoos. Because it always has to be, even without buying a new CPU.
The two new CPUs tested were provided by AMD, as were four older models. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D and all Intel CPUs are from my private inventory and were purchased myself. The motherboard and memory come from retailers or MSI as well as Corsair and, like the CPUs, were only provided on the condition that the lock periods for these products were adhered to. There was no direct or indirect influence or a compensation for expenses.
