Temperature behavior
Now we come to the temperature behavior. The well-known B650E platform with Ryzen 9 7900 was again used as the test system. The graphics card of choice was once again the RX 7700XT Pure. Due to the summer temperatures and a room temperature of 26.3°C, the measured values certainly deviate somewhat from tests under “ideal conditions”.
General conditions:
AIO/CPU fans: 850rpm
Case fans: 750rpm
Pump: 2400rpm
Room temperature: 26.3°C (!)
CPU Torture
For the CPU stress test, I again used Cinebench R23 in continuous loop. Almost over the entire test, about 160W were applied to maintain an allcore boost of ~4900MHz (PBO on). The average temperature of the Ryzen 9 7900 was 95.3°C, so it boosted to its thermal target despite the 360mm AIO. Although this is “by design” and I rarely or never run such workloads in everyday life, the value would simply be a thorn in my side, which is why I run the CPU with PBO off outside of the test sessions.
Gaming workload
Borderlands 3 was again used for the gaming test, as it practically fully utilizes the graphics card throughout and therefore generates a lot of waste heat. Especially with AIOs mounted in the lid, this has a significant effect on the CPU temperature, as the waste heat from the graphics card is transported outside through the radiator. After a certain period of gaming, the CPU stabilized in the mid 70°C range.
The graphics card, on the other hand, could not make the 3500X sweat. It didn’t even reach the specified temperature limit of 60°C over the entire test period, while the fans barely had to turn 1500rpm.
With a fixed 86°C, the HotSpot was in an absolutely harmless range, but the large delta to the GPU temperature surprised me somewhat. Maybe I should switch to a Honeywell pad?
Interim conclusion
Basically, the temperatures in the Corsair 3500X can be described as decent. Thanks to the airy design and the decent airflow, good results can be achieved even at low fan speeds. Unfortunately, the pre-installed case fans are not exactly quiet and are therefore only tolerable at very low speeds of up to 750rpm. The slower you set them, the lower the slight humming noise they make. Not a disaster, but at a surcharge of approx. 40€ compared to the non-RGB version of the 3500X, I would definitely go for the version WITHOUT the pre-installed fans.
