Temperatures and clock rates
Once again, I have deliberately put this section on the last page because no one else will find it. However, I have once again shortened it a little, because it is relatively easy to explain. The Ryzen 9 9950X is definitely easier to cool than the Ryzen 9 7950X. At 76 °C (ok, 35 watts less), it was even cooler in the Blender run than the Ryzen 9 7950X at 88 °C. AMD can take credit for this. The CPU is therefore thermally rather inconspicuous and the technical solution can be found in the deep dive on page one. Even under load, my sample boosted often enough up to 5.7 GHz and thus also meets the specifications. What was noticeable, however, was the significantly more hectic clock behavior under rapidly changing loads.
Summary and conclusion
The Janus head, with its two faces, has been a symbol of duality and eternal conflict for ages. It looks simultaneously into the past and the future – always looking in two directions without committing itself. The Ryzen 9 9950X can only follow suit, and in a highly contradictory way. On the one hand, it shines in some applications with its impressive computing power and leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to demanding tasks. But woe betide it when it comes to everyday applications such as gaming!
The Ryzen 9 9950X suddenly looks like an overambitious bodybuilder trying to stick a stamp on with a rubber sledgehammer, forgetting that you should lick it first. In these moments, it shows its other face: namely one that wonders why you should bother at all if the task is so banal on the one hand and the firmware is constantly getting tangled up in the too-tight trouser legs on the other. As a result, this CPU simply seems somehow listless and out of place, although it could certainly do much better given its undeniable potential.
AMD certainly still has a lot of work to do here in terms of firmware, because as good as the server CPUs may be, the derived consumer variants are not (yet). The entire launch therefore simply seems rushed and you really have to ask yourself why AMD didn’t wait so long for everything to really work. It is precisely for this reason that today’s assessment should be seen as provisional, because even if the substructure may be right, there is still a huge need for renovation on the software side. You simply can’t and shouldn’t launch a good product like this if you don’t want to destroy it on day one with a noble gesture towards Intel itself.
The price of 709 euros (RRP) is certainly too high compared to the current performance. Let’s hope that there will be significant improvements to the firmware in the foreseeable future, otherwise the Ryzen 7000 and 7000X3D will probably remain the best choice for end users. Intel will certainly be relieved to see this, as AMD would actually have had the opportunity to close the bag for the foreseeable future. But that’s exactly what they didn’t manage to do this time, despite all the expectations that were raised.
The Ryzen 9 9950X was made available on loan by AMD, just as most Ryzen 7000 models have already been largely sampled by AMD. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D and all older Intel CPUs are from my private stock and were purchased myself, as was the Core i7-14700K, which died far too soon. The motherboard and memory were purchased from MSI and Corsair and, like the CPUs, were only made available on the condition that the embargo periods for these products were observed. There was no direct or indirect influence or compensation for expenses.
