MONSTER VMAY TV outdoor speaker test – reminiscent of the 1980s, but with better technology and less lugging around

I remember my student days in Dresden, when I used to drive up the hill behind Gorbitz with an old Soviet Junost suitcase TV, a heavy 12V car battery, a crate of beer, a barbecue and other bits and bobs together with friends in a Trabi station wagon, whenever there was an international soccer match on in the warm season, which of course could not be received in the “valley of the unsuspecting”. With a stand and bracket on the roof rack for a good long Yagi and antenna amplifier (from Meuselwitz, of course), it almost looked like radio monitoring. But it worked and I was somehow happy with it. But times change and today, after almost 40 years, I’m once again testing a portable TV (including multimedia boom box) for outdoors because I realized on my last vacation that I could definitely use something like that again.

So Olympia outside? That works quite well. You don’t have to lug around an external battery and the smartphone is a good source. Somehow the test sample fell to my feet by chance and I always find it hard to say no. The Monster VMAY Portable Outdoor TV, which I tormented outdoors, is a very versatile and robust device that, according to the manufacturer, was specially developed for outdoor activities, but is also a nice visual bridging aid in the garden or basement when work and live offers collide again. Party music without a picture also works, by the way, but I’ll come to that in a moment. Everyone is testing balcony power stations and I’m doing the opposite, I’m testing a balcony power consumer. So first things first and unpacked…

Scope of delivery and unboxing

The device arrived relatively quickly from an EU warehouse. So you don’t have to worry about customs duties and long waiting times. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have bought it, despite the want-to-have factor. But it’s a pretty good deal this way, especially as the current 349 euros is just about the pain threshold when you consider everything you get. At the very end, I also managed to get hold of a promo code that brings the price down to under 300 euros. But more on that in the conclusion.

The almost 8 kilos of live weight are well packed, the built-in lead-acid battery (yes, I’ll write about that in a moment) is fully charged (but that doesn’t change the weight) and the accessories are nicely bagged. The voltage curve is rising and I can finally watch TV on the balcony again after my flat-screen TV for outdoors gave up the ghost after 4 years. Well, it was also a bit my fault, because the grill underneath was probably too hot in the long run. Shit happens and there’s still room on the table.

And what else is there for the money? I open all the bags and reminisce about the 1980s at the sight of the old-school antenna.

Coaxial plugs and a USB-powered receiver module quickly conjure up the right feeling. Until I realize that the DVB-T/DVB-T2 doesn’t really work behind the house, only in front of it. But for good old FM radio, the whole thing works relatively well even in the green refuge, so once again I’m lucky. The station search is automatic, just like the TV. After all. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself…

You also get a real printed manual and a remote control that even teleports you to the OSD and can control even more than the buttons in menu level one. There is also a very practical USB-C to HDMI cable, a 3.5 mm jack cable for analog audio and a normal, two-pin power cable. That’s it and that’s enough. The plastic bag is enough for the antenna, I prefer to pack the rest of the cables in the back of the cable box. It’s then easier to carry. Extra bags are rather cumbersome and you can usually leave the antenna at home anyway. It can also be more modern.

Witziges Teil! 👍

Hier kommen uns Dinos viele schöne Erinnerungen.
