Unboxing and features
Despite the low price, the Edifier MR4 Studio impresses with its fairly solid construction (we’ll take a look at it in a moment) and the appealing design, which is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The cabinets of the MR4 are made of a decent MDF (medium density fiberboard), which offers a good balance between stability and acoustic performance. The two speaker cabinets measure approximately 230 mm in height, 150 mm in width and 178 mm in depth. These compact dimensions make them ideal for use on desks or in small studios where space is limited. The MDF material helps to minimize unwanted resonances that could affect the sound quality.
The front panel of the speakers is designed to integrate a wave guide for the drivers, which optimizes sound dispersion and improves clarity, especially in the tweeters (implied wave guide). The cabinets are available in two color options: black and white, each with black controls and drivers, giving the design a modern and sleek aesthetic. The MR4s are designed as 2-way systems, using a 1-inch silk dome tweeter and a 4-inch woofer. This driver combination is capable of covering a frequency range from 60 Hz to 20 kHz. This specification is reasonably honest.
The weight of the Edifier MR4 speakers is around 3.4 kg per pair. This moderate weight contributes to the stability of the speakers and ensures that they remain firmly in place without being easily displaced. A multi-function button on the front of the active speaker is used for switching on and off, volume control and switching between the two sound modes: monitor and music. Monitor mode offers a flat frequency response that is well suited for mixing and production, while Music mode offers a warmer sound signature with emphasized mids and highs, enhancing the enjoyment of music and movies. A parallel-switched audio input in the front, as well as the headphone output (switches off playback via the speakers) are also quite practical and useful.
The rear of the active speaker houses the most important connections and controls. The controls for bass and treble are located on the rear and offer an adjustment of ±6 dB. However, the two bass reflex tubes would like to be around 10 to 15 cm away from the wall. At least.
There are RCA, TRS and 3.5 mm aux inputs as well as a 3.5 mm headphone output. This variety of connections allows the speakers to be flexibly integrated into various audio setups.
These include the terminal strip for the left, passive speaker and the permanently attached mains cable without a real physical power switch, which is a shame.
However, a digital input and Bluetooth are not even available for an extra charge. The circuitry has already been blocked. Edifier has chosen the R1280 BT as the multimedia price breaker, but here you have to do without it. Well, they do cost a bit more, but oh well. Different target group, especially visually….
