Look & feel
Other information and a list of technical details can be found on the back of the paper banderole. The packaging of the GX05 in-ear headphones is unusually large for in-ear headphone storage boxes. If you pick up the packaging before opening it for the first time, you will quickly notice the very heavy weight. However, this heavy weight is not due to the large box or the in-ears it contains, but to the charging case and its materials.
This charging case has a futuristic design and weighs over 100 grams due to the metal housing used. In contrast to most in-ear headphones on the market, HECATE has not given the GX05 a fully closable case. Instead, a hexagonal metal housing is used, which is closed by a metal bracket consisting of three double spokes. The metal bracket holds the two earbuds inserted in the case and the USB-C dongle, which is also housed in the case, in place. The bracket is attached to a joint in the middle that allows it to be turned clockwise.
The unusual design and the closure are not the only special features of the charging case, which contains a 380 mAh battery. HECATE has equipped the case with RGB lighting on three of the six outer edges, which is activated every time the case is opened and closed. The lighting effects and colors can be adjusted via a switch on the underside of the case.
When opening and closing, not only the lighting of the charging case is activated, but also the RGB LEDs built into the in-ears. These light up to match the set effect or color. However, there is no way to permanently activate the lighting of the case or the headphones in the desired color or effect. While the lighting of the charging case switches off completely after a certain time, the LEDs integrated in the headphones indicate the battery and connection status by flashing in color. The battery of the charging case is charged via a USB Type C port integrated on the front.
The earbuds in detail
The GX05 gaming in-ear headphones from HECATE are visually characterized by their compact and curved design, which forms a clear contrast to the strikingly designed charging case. The charging case, made of metal and equipped with RGB lighting, looks futuristic and robust, while the in-ears themselves appear more restrained thanks to their simple design and matt black plastic surface. The in-ears have RGB-illuminated metal elements on the outside, which form a visual link to the charging case.
Touch controls are located behind the flat outer sides of the headphones for easy control. HECATE has also integrated two microphones into the outside of the headphones to ensure optimum voice recording.
On the back of the headphones are platinum-plated contacts (HECATE writes gold, but this is incorrect), which are used to charge the integrated lithium-ion batteries. A label on the headphones indicates the correct wearing direction. To protect the 10 mm drivers from dirt, the headphones are fitted with a fine cromium-nickel steel grille under the ear tips. HECATE supplies the GX05 with three different ear tip sizes to ensure the right wearing comfort (as I already mentioned). The round design of the ear tip holder allows the use of almost all commercially available ear tips, but Edifier can also help here.
The included USB-C dongle ensures broad compatibility with common game consoles, PCs and notebooks and offers a low latency of just 15 milliseconds thanks to the 2.4 GHz connection. The workmanship of the GX05 headphones is very high quality and clean. The only point of criticism is the susceptibility of the plastic housing to fingerprints. Overall, the GX05 offer well thought-out functions and a high quality of workmanship that you don’t always find.
