Micron’s next DDR5 evolution – Crucial DDR5 Pro and Pro overclocking kits review with Teardown and OC
Summary and conclusion
The heatspreaders made of black anodized aluminium are spartan and simple, but still look elegant. In keeping with the product name, the design somehow screams “professional” or “workstation”. In addition, the modules are barely larger than JEDEC A0 reference dimensions and should therefore fit under almost any cooler. The surface of the heatspreaders is typically slightly matt and relatively insensitive for anodized aluminium and even if the thermal mass of the aluminium sheets is rather low, this is fine for frugal memory ICs like these.
With only 1.2 V VDD/VDDQ, the maximum performance can be teased out of our test kits, which of course benefits the power consumption and waste heat. 7000 Mbps with respectable timings can thus be operated stably on the 4-DIMM Asus Maximus Z790 Hero motherboard with both kits, whereby the Pro Overclocking Kit has slightly higher quality ICs installed and can therefore run somewhat tighter timings. Presumably other testers were unable to achieve these clocks with the new Crucial DDR5 Pro modules because it is relatively difficult and time-consuming to find out the voltage sweetspot at 1.2 V.
With DDR5-7000, Micron is definitely not claiming the performance crown, but especially for budget-conscious buyers with mid-range systems, the modules with the new 16 Gbit Rev D ICs could be just the right compromise between price and performance. Even if you consider that the majority of Intel CPUs and motherboards can’t really run faster than DDR5-7200 stably anyway and AMD CPUs can deliver comparable performance with DDR5-6000, Crucial’s new DDR5 Pro kits look even better.
The performance of the kits with the supplied XMP and EXPO profiles also has nothing to hide and, together with the slightly slower alternative profiles, the best possible compatibility is also ensured. Of course, the modules do not have RGB lighting. However, this is unlikely to be an important selling point for the target group of workstation users and gamers with cost-efficient systems anyway. Instead, you simply get solid DDR5 RAM from the house brand of a flash manufacturer, including Limited Lifetime Warranty, at a reasonable price.
The DDR5 “Pro Overclocking” modules are certainly the slightly higher quality product, with the somewhat more stylish design, better PMIC cooling, the slightly better selected ICs and therefore well worth the 5 euro price difference to the regular Pro Kit. However, if you want to save a few more Euros or have very limited space for RAM in your system, the regular DDR5 “Pro” kit for around 110 euros is also a very good choice. Finally, hobby overclockers can also squeeze some extra performance out of the modules if required, which makes the Crucial DDR5 Pro kits a real price-performance recommendation.
The Crucial Pro Overclocking 2x 16 GB DDR5-6000 kit was kindly provided to us by Crucial. The Crucial Pro 2x 16 GB DDR5-5600 kit was purchased privately as a retail product. There was no obligation to publish it. Furthermore, no influence was exerted on the tests and their results.
