The moment of truth: Real workloads from the daily work environment
Now we come to the direct comparison with real applications The following benchmarks show a de facto equality. It is also interesting to note that all three PCIe 5.0 SSDs dominate less in some applications than one might expect based on the theoretical performance data. Yes, these new PCIe 5.0 SSDs are really fast, but the SSD is not always the real slowing link in the chain. When it comes to writing, programs such as Ansys Icepak and Handbrake benefit enormously, as the rate is significantly higher when it comes to writing larger streams. Maya 2017, MCAT and 3dsm, on the other hand, are slightly weaker than the fast HP FX9000 Pro and PCIe 4.0. However, the vast majority of programs benefit from the new standard. And the MSI M580 Frozr wins by a razor-thin margin over the new Corsair MP700 Pro SE when writing within the absolute tolerance range of both other SSDs.
Reading is very similar, the performance boost is usually just as significant and more or less pronounced as with writing. You can definitely feel the big theoretical advantage in practice, even if it is not as extreme as you might have expected. And what does it look like in direct comparison? Here too, you can see the advantage of the new SSDs in a few apps, especially with large blocks. However, you can also see that both MSI and Corsair have certainly optimized the firmware slightly differently.
Yes, the performance has also visibly increased in some applications, but not as extremely as the synthetic benchmarks might suggest. And that’s exactly why you really have to consider whether you can really feel it subjectively and, above all, whether it really increases productivity in your individual case to such an extent that the extra cost is worth it. If the answer is yes, then you will certainly do everything right with the new SSD. But it really depends on the applications. Synthetics isn’t everything and you won’t win anything at work with benchmarks.
Summary and conclusion
If we ignore the price of the 720 Euro RRP (unfortunately I had street prices until now), which will certainly be adjusted later according to the actual market availability, then the Corsair MP700 Pro SE is perhaps exactly what is currently technically feasible for the end user (gamer or creator) with normal effort. It doesn’t have to be 4 TB, because 2 TB is usually enough. There are already various models in this performance class, but Corsair has succeeded in launching another competitive product, which is above all thermally stable if a suitable cooler is used. However, the comparison with the MSI M580 Frozr also shows that the same speed SSD WITH cooler is over 100 euros cheaper than the absolutely identical MP700 Pro SE from Corsair WITHOUT cooler!
Such an SSD can be recommended to all those who are on the hunt for the last ounce of performance, who have enough space on the motherboard and for whom the 5-year warranty takes away some of the doubt as to how long the controller and the Micron NAND can cope with the change from pSLC and TLC mode without loss. It’s no secret that this is also due to the interaction between controller and flash memory. However, Micron hasn’t just been doing this since yesterday and the TBW specifications are always one of those things. For example, I only wrecked an Intel SSD after several petabytes, although according to the specs it should have been dead for a long time.
Conclusion: It’s a good product, but extremely overpriced compared to the competition if you apply the RRP. So if you want the MP700 Pro SE, you’d better wait and see if the street price comes down. But for 720 euros, I simply don’t have the arguments. Yes, the last bit of performance is, as always, the most expensive, but we know that the competition offers the same technology at a much lower price. If you want to be beautiful, fast and quiet at the same time, you have to suffer and, above all, you should compare prices. Or pay with a grumble and then please don’t complain.
