The following list contains what I consider to be the most important functions of a NAS. I take a detailed look at whether this function is available and if so, how it has been implemented. If you think something is missing here, please feel free to send me your comments in the forum.
App
There isan app for Android, but at the time of testing it was only available as an APK direct download from Ugreen and not on the Google Playstore. For iOS you have to join the beta program TestFlight, then the app can be installed.
The basic range of functions is already quite good, but like the rest of the software, you can tell that the whole thing is quite old. I think there will be a lot more to come in the course of development.
Applications
The App Center is currently very limited, there isn’t much choice. Here, too, I assume that the scope will gradually expand.
Nevertheless, the current state is somewhat sad and is only inadequately improved by the listing of applications that are already pre-installed by default.
Virtualization / Docker
But that’s not so bad, because thanks to the existing support for Docker, there are practically limitless expansion options.
So just install the manager and you have access to thousands of container-based applications.
I’ll show it here using OpenSpeedTest (Github / Docker)as an example, which we can use later for the speed test.
Backup from the computer
This function can also be retrofitted via the App Center and also installs a tool that can manage the versioning of files available in BTRFS.
Here, for example, folders can be synchronized from a server or computer to the NAS.
Complete backups can also be set up, but this requires the Ugreen application for Windows to be installed and used, for example. This option does not appear in the Web GUI.
Picture gallery
Images can also be backed up to the NAS and managed and presented nicely; the corresponding extension can be downloaded from the App Center. Theprerequisite is the activation of the personal folder for the users who are to access it
When uploading via the website, I was a little confused that nothing happened after selecting the images. I was expecting a progress bar in the Photos application, but instead I had to open the Task Center in the top right-hand corner to see the processes running in the background. In my opinion, there should be a notification, hint or at least an animation.
However, I was once again surprised by the range of functions; here, too, a really good job has been done. The face recognition delivers many hits, even if, for example, only 3 out of 5 pictures of the woman in the red jacket appear in the person album. The child was also recognized as two people, but manual merging is quick and easy. I also like the way the different locations are displayed on a world map instead of a boring list. There arealso various other AI models to download in the settings, the recognition of 32 dog and cat breeds is of course particularly important!
