Real achievable clock rates and overclocking
This time, the clock rates and readout are simple. While the GPU clock of the Super card is between 2895 and 2910 MHz when cold, it levels off permanently at an absolutely constant 2865 MHz after it starts to warm up and at 99% to 100% load in gaming and Ultra-HD a few boost steps lower. You can definitely leave that alone. With manual OC, you can even get close to or above 3 GHz with a bit of luck, but then it freezes or the driver resets.
GPU temperatures in the housing
The differences are not as great as feared if you use a proper case. If you close the panel, the GPU temperature (edge) rises by around 2 Kelvin, while the CPU hotspot rises by up to 3 Kelvin. Nevertheless, the values of 53 to 55 °C (Edge) and 62 to 65 °C (Hotspot) are absolutely nothing to be afraid of. On the contrary, you almost get chills. We will see later from the fan curves that PNY has made a very clever move here. However, the concept works perfectly.
Infrared measurements (heat flow analysis)
For the measurements, I laboriously removed the backplate and screwed the board back on without the backplate. The whole thing is then inserted into the modified Lian Li T70 with hood for the measurements in the closed setup.
Let’s take a look at the gaming loop and we can see that the voltage converters don’t really get hot. The 9 phases are only 9 phases and we remember the teardown. But that still fits perfectly here…
… only in the stress test do we see that the pads on the backplate would have been better placed below the VRM and not the RAM. The memory is really cool enough as it is.
Let’s take another look at the backplate and see why the pads were placed in a pointless position:
