Temperature behavior
As I had evaluated the thermal behavior of the black version of the Dark Base Pro 901 using an air cooler, this time I wanted to test what the spacious case is capable of with a 360mm AIO. In combination with the Silent Loop 2 in the 360mm version, I was actually able to achieve really excellent results, I can already reveal that.
Test system:
The usual B550 / Ryzen 9 3900X RX 7700XT system was again used as the test system.
General conditions:
AIO fans: 800rpm
Case fans: 900rpm
Pump: 2000rpm
CPU Torture
For the CPU stress test, I used Cinebench R23 in continuous loop again. Since the temperature didn’t want to rise into the usual temperature range around 80°C even after an extraordinarily long warm-up phase, I made sure once again whether any settings had been changed in the BIOS. But everything was correct: 145W continuous power, approx. 4100MHz allcore boost with PBO on. This was probably the lowest value for the 3900X that I have measured so far in my case tests, just below the NZXT H6 Flow test, in which the large Kraken AIO was used.
Gaming workload
Borderlands 3 was again used for the gaming test, as it practically fully utilizes the graphics card throughout and therefore generates a lot of waste heat. Especially with AIOs mounted in the lid, this has a significant effect on the CPU temperature, as the waste heat from the graphics card is transported outside through the radiator. When starting a game, a lot obviously has to be compiled, which is why there was a brief rise in temperature to approx. 67°C, after which the CPU stabilized in the low 50°C range.
The graphics card also kept a cool head in this monstrous tower and only briefly scratched the 60°C mark once during the entire test.
As with the GPU temperature, there were no surprises with the HotSpot. Compared to the smaller cases tested recently, the temperature is only 1-2K below the respective measurements, even though there is no fan aimed directly at the graphics card.
Interim conclusion
Basically, everything has already been said in the original review of the black version. Thanks to its size and good airflow, the Dark Base Pro 901 achieves excellent results and, in conjunction with the Silent Loop 2 used, was convincing across the board. However, the pre-assembled case fans are only really quiet at the lowest level (approx. 550rpm) of the integrated PWM controller; at the next level, the fans already rotate at approx. 900rpm (as used here in the test) and are still audible even at a sitting distance of 1m.
