Summary
In today’s article, I was – hopefully – able to explain the difference between a colorimeter, a spectrophotometer and a spectroradiometer. It was probably pretty dry stuff, but sometimes there’s no other way. The bottom line is that if you really want to measure accurately at all times, you need at least one spectrophotometer that is calibrated regularly.
I’ll show you in a separate article to what extent the ColorChecker Display Plus in conjunction with the software from Calibrite is still worthwhile. I’ll also show you how the ColorChecker Studio performs. Now I can compare it with the UPRtek MK550T and Calman. Because measuring your own calibration with the Calibrite software and the ColorChecker Studio would mean: Obviousness meets premonition!
With regard to the UPRtek MK550T, my expectations were far exceeded. The capabilities and accuracy of the MK550T are impressive. Now the critics from back then (article on SpyderX vs. ColorChecker Display Plus) can get back to me.
After all, it was criticized completely unobjectively that you should never validate a calibration with a 250 euro colorimeter. Funny, if you know where the limits of measurement technology are, you can also work with such a cheap device and expensive software. Money alone doesn’t score goals, but perhaps the critics will now give up? The MK550T costs almost three times as much as Portrait Displays Calman Ultimate. In comparison, a ColorChecker Studio looks “cheap” – not meant in a derogatory way – and an x-Rite i1-Basic Pro3 only “cheap” in the end!
Conclusion
The UPRtek MK550T is perfect for me and what I do – testing monitors for you. The MK550T also enables me to measure real world HDR in terms of peak brightness. This was previously only possible with synthetic patterns via Calman. I can also measure flicker, mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets – although I’m not currently planning to do this. However, the MK550T and the ColorChecker Studio will certainly be used for notebooks.
The question remains: Who is the UPRtek MK550T made for? Clearly, this is something for industry, e.g. in the printing and panel/monitor manufacturing sectors. The MK550T is certainly a “cheap” and – compared to other spectroradiometers – a damn fast solution for precise measurements. It is also flexible, as it does not require a connection to a PC or extra software.
If you are looking for one of the best and most accurate tools for private use, you can also buy an MK550T if you have that much money to spare. In my opinion, however, this is unnecessary! A ColorChecker Studio or an i1Basic Pro3 are perfectly adequate. Personally, I’m very happy that UPRtek is supporting us here as a partner and that we can use the MK550T on permanent loan.
Outlook
I definitely need to adjust my page 3 again with regard to the monitor articles. Now that I have adapted my methodology. I will certainly take over some of the information from today’s article. I will also introduce you to the two measuring devices from Calibrite – including the respective software. In my opinion, these two devices are exactly what some of you readers would buy if you knew that they would deliver in the end. Stay tuned…
The MK550T is provided to me by UPRtek without obligation – for monitor or panel testing purposes. There was no influence on the tests and results. There was also no compensation for expenses and no obligation to publish. The same applies to the ColorChecker tools from Calibrite.
