HDR gaming
In general, HDR is child’s play for the MSI MEG342C QD-OLED. The almost five million pixels are self-illuminating, making a virtually infinite contrast ratio possible. Black is virtually light out and that is simply mega cool. Samsung’s QD-OLED convinced me even more than LG’s WOLED.
The colors are brighter and crisper and the MEG342C can easily crack the 1000 nits at 1 and 2 percent APL. Unfortunately, MSI has completely screwed up the EOTF tracking and thus also the luminance. Simon Baker was also able to confirm these measurements with his sample. At this point, my measurements don’t coincide at all with those of my colleague Tim from Hardware Unboxed – for the first time. Not because Tim measured poorly, his sample was significantly better calibrated in terms of EOTF/Luminance. He had the monitor long before the official launch. Click here for the video !
So you are spoiled for choice between two HDR options: Either max. 450 nits or over 1000 nits peak brightness.
HDR True Black 400
This is what HDR looks like when the gray scale tracking fails, which means that the shadow details are lost and everything that needs to be bright is much too bright in case of doubt. This is particularly clear from the extreme DeltaE with regard to Saturation and ColorChecker! At least it makes no difference whether you have an AMD or NVIDIA GPU, as you can see from the measurements. I will discuss this topic again in the next article on the Samsung Odyssey OLED G8. HDR 1000 Nits mode
I didn’t want to withhold the 1000 nits mode from you. As you can see, it doesn’t get any better, so I didn’t bother with the ColorChecker etc. measurements. My time is precious, especially when you can predict the result. It was only important to me that you can see that the 1000 nits are feasible. Nevertheless, MSI urgently needs to release a firmware update. It would be best to include the issues already mentioned in the firmware update! So, I think that’s it for today. Last page…
